Gritty mostly, quaint Downtown, high addictions - 7/25/2021
Grew up here, returned here to assist family after lining/working South of Boston, San Diego, then North of Boston respectively. Outside of the quaint/Historic Downtown and immediate area West of it, the city shows a very gritty underbelly with lots of drugs/addiction and poverty and unemployment -and attitude that goes with them....not very conducive to continual and forward economic growth, and as such it has sputtered on/off. While unemployment is always a problem here, this city is no worse than any other old Northeastern city. Yes, we do have crime and bad areas, just as any other city does. We also have a vibrant arts community, a growing tourist industry, wonderful coastal location on Buzzards Bay and easy access to Boston, Providence, Newport and Cape Cod. We also have a mild (by New England standards) climate, excellent seafood and a reasonable cost of living.

I just heard the best analogy today about New Bedford. It's like the Ford Motor comapany ..... it was once great but it will never dig itself out of the hole it's in to become what it once was.
