If you are looking for a nice area to retire, then Plymouth might be ideal for you. Downtown Plymouth and the waterfront are both lined with restaurants and little shops. A little on the expensive side though, but as for the food, definitely worth the money. I have been living in Plymouth for 4 years now, and for a 25 year old with a 9 month old daughter, there has been no opportunity. Finding a job is nearly impossible, unless, of course, you want to waitress, bartend, or clean peoples houses. Not much nightlife, everyone in Plymouth seems to go to bed at 10:00. Life in Plymouth - 5/18/2008
My wife and I have lived in Plymouth for 4 years. We find it a very friendly town that is open to newcomers. Whle the town is the largest in area in Massachusetts, it maintains the small town feel. The negative points are the climate (we had over 10 feet of snow the first year here with a 52" drift in our back yard) and the cost of living. The state seems to feel that it needs to manage your life and it collects taxes that reflect that philosophy. Housing is also quite expensive with a nice small 2 bedroom home on the market for $250,000 to $300,000. We would love to be here in the spring summer and fall but go to warmer climates in the winter

Plymouth is a quick ride to Boston and next door to Cape Cod. There is a lot of history in Plymouth, and you have the ocean, ponds, forest etc. Houses are not on top of each other...you have rural without feeling you are in the boon docks. There are so many new shops in the area, I would say everything you need is very close but not intruding into neighborhoods. My family and I lived in South Plymouth for a little over 10 years up to abt. 1 yr. ago when my husband was transfered to Florida. South Plymouth is a close knit community for such a large area. They have recently built a beautiful middle school and updated their high school, where two of my children have attended. The area is appx. 1 hour south of Boston and very close to beautiful Cape Cod. Shopping and dining are plentiful as wel as the recreation. We lived in an older neighborhood of homes built in the 1980's and always had a sense of feeling safe. Downtown and the waterfront are a great day tour, you can see the Mayflower replica and Plymouth Rock. Just south of town is Plimouth Plantation, a reenaction of early settler life.
The Cape Cod Canal is just a few miles away, and you've got much of that charm in Plymouth without the hassle of getting over the bridge.
Boston is an easy day trip by bus or commuter rail to South Station, about an hour's ride either mode of transportation.
