Cost of Living - 11/4/2008
After living for more than 3 years in Jackson Hole, WY, my wife and I had to relocate to Rochester/Rochester Hills, Michigan...ostensibly to care of my wife's elderly and ailing parents. Upon relocating we noticed a significant upward spike in general cost of living in the Rochester/Rochester Hills area...as compared to Jackson Hole, WY! We were really shocked to see not only food prices significantly higher in Rochester/Rochester Hills but also just about everything else...especially sky high property taxes...that, in our opinion, really did not provide an "ROI" to citizens...given the poor condition most local roads and infrastructure were in. We also noticed the extensive use of expensive "concrete" on local roads...which (1) typically was not cured properly (2)not poured nor leveled properly, (3) deteriorated more quickly than asphalt but when repairs were needed....ASPHALT was typically used due to the long repair time associated with concrete. The only conclusion we could Read More

Quality of life - 7/6/2007
Living here is different than when we were in New England. There is more pressure to excel, and they care more about your job then how long you have been here. Took awhile to acclimate, but I am starting to see some of the strong points (after 17 years!)

Recreation is excellent here. They have an outstanding art museum, lots of lakes and golf courses, and many excellent sports teams to go and root for. Going to a Pistons or Shock game couldn't be easier. Tigers and Red Wings games have plentiful parking. And everything is right off a major highway. If sports are your thing, then this is a good Read More

nice area, not so nice weather - 7/24/2006
I can't wait until next year when I graduate from college because it will be bye bye Michigan! For me, snow or freezing cold weather 8 monnths out of the year, scorching hot or humid weather 2 months out of the year and 2 months of relatively nice weather is not something that I want to look forward to for the rest of my life. Weather aside, Rochester Hills is a very nice place to live. Its pretty, nice houses, and close to Detroit but still a safe suburban area. I like that it only takes me 30 minutes average to get to Wayne State University. I also feel safe in Rochester Hills in the night time. If my husband and I had children, I would feel safe letting them play outside. The only downside to this area, besides the weather, is the heavy rush hour traffic between 3 and 6. Because we are so close to Detroit, is is hell trying to get anywhere on time during these hours. What would normally be a 10 minute drive is a 30 minute drive. It is also pretty expensive to live here. But it Read More
