High Taxes ? Poor Schools ? - responce to 'Jessica - 10/9/2007
Not sure where Jessica gets her 'high taxes' information - but for the area - only neighboring Berkley's total taxes are lower (their city tax is actually higher) - Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Ferndale, Birmingham are all significantly higher - as is both Madison Hts., Hazel Park, Oak Park & Clawson. This info. is available via Oakland County website.

As for school performance and infrastructure improvements - Royal Oak is headed in the right direction as test scores and building improvements indicate. I wish people who complain would at least have their facts Read More

Great place to live - 7/14/2007
Royal Oak is a wonderful place with friendly people, beautiful neighborhoods, and a vibrant downtown with lots of restaraunts, bars, and entertainment.

It is close enough to Detroit to experience Big City perks like professional spots and world class entertainment, but far enough away to feel an escape from traffic and congestion.

My experience with the city services has been positive, and the city is very safe. The local farmers market provides fresh produce and a nice cultural aspect. There are aslo a variety of unique stores, entertainment venues, and marketplaces that are famous throughout metro-Detroit.

High Taxes, Poor Education - 5/10/2007
I have lived in Royal Oak my entire life and I am sad to see what it has become. I am a late twenty-something mother of two with a college education who finds Royal Oak to be lacking in so many ways. The property taxes are ridiculous, the downtown area is not family friendly and is expensive to patronize. The schools are continuing a downhill slide to substandard education and are unsafe.

Royal Oak is one happening city - 2/4/2006
Sure they're messing up the archetecture of the city with all the mega-condo's they're building here, but if you have to live in metro Detroit you won't find a nicer area. Plenty of bars, and restaurants, and galleries, still has the nice homey neighborhoods, the schools have gone downhill, but that's because every yokel that gets a job has to move out to 123 mile rd. But the area here between Ferndale and Birmingham off Woodward is the best in the State if you enjoy music, food, and art. only problem is it's still freezing in the Read More
