If you like outdoor recreation and also enjoy the arts, you must check out Traverse City. From watersports in the summer to skiing in the winter, this town has it all. If you can't find a fun outdoor activity, you aren't trying - period. T.C. is also blessed to home to the Interlochen School of the Arts which offers programs throughout the year as well as a phenominal summer program of music and dance with famous artists from across the country.

Big Disappointment - 7/15/2006
We travel extensively in MI - it has always been one of our favorite places to spend a summer. In the past, TC has been one of our favorite cities. We just were there (2006) and it was a huge disappointment. We had not been back in a few years and the changes we saw were sad.
We found the people to be rude - from the bumper stickers saying,"it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?" to the hotel service staff who left a note in English stating the reason she couldn't change the sheets was because she didn't speak English to the waitress who spilled water on me and huffed about it - no apology. The first thing we saw when we arrived were about 12 people holding signs protesting the war, Republicans and our troops (we did laugh about that - they looked a little silly because the 12 included little kids who looked bored and confused about what they were doing). One of the rarest gems in America. - 7/2/2006
Lived here for 3 years, I miss it! A truly unique and gorgeous area for outdoor enthusiasts. NO pollution. Everything great a small town has to offer with the amenities that a city has to offer as well. The most beautiful scenery! So many forests, vineyards, beaches. Sailing, hiking, you name it. Not diverse, though- mainly white. Traffic problems due to poor planning, but still better than a city by far. People are SO friendly. A mix of conservatives and liberals. I am a more hippie type and I felt very at home there. Right on the great lakes! The winters are beautiful (but if you are used to warmer climates, T.C. may not be your thing). Not an abundance of night life and sort of cut off from the mainstream culture- concerts, etc. But a thriving arts culture exists. Check out Michael Moore's annual film festival. Nature has been kind to Traverse City. Situated between the east and west arms of Grand Traverse Bay, it offers an incredible array of outdoor activities. Winters can be brutal--over 100 inches of snow, day after day of clouds, and just plain cold. Downtown retains its charm, but there is an obvious sprawl in the outlying areas, complete with all of the big box stores and franchises one expects in Everytown, USA. The roads are not especially well maintained, though the snow removal crews do a great job. Drivers occasionally engage in rude behavior--loud sound systems at all hours of the day and night, vehicles with no mufflers (or mufflers designed to be loud), peeling out from stop signs, and so on. Traffic does not flow well, but the city does not seem to be in a hurry to address the issue.
There are a number of fine eateries, and cultural opportunities are surprisingly rich considering the size of the community. Northwestern Michigan College is located in
