Still a Beautiful Place

Nature has been kind to Traverse City. Situated between the east and west arms of Grand Traverse Bay, it offers an incredible array of outdoor activities. Winters can be brutal--over 100 inches of snow, day after day of clouds, and just plain cold. Downtown retains its charm, but there is an obvious sprawl in the outlying areas, complete with all of the big box stores and franchises one expects in Everytown, USA. The roads are not especially well maintained, though the snow removal crews do a great job. Drivers occasionally engage in rude behavior--loud sound systems at all hours of the day and night, vehicles with no mufflers (or mufflers designed to be loud), peeling out from stop signs, and so on. Traffic does not flow well, but the city does not seem to be in a hurry to address the issue.
There are a number of fine eateries, and cultural opportunities are surprisingly rich considering the size of the community. Northwestern Michigan College is located in Traverse City as well. All things considered, this is a good place to live.
