Omaha entertainment - 1/4/2011
Omaha may not have as large of a selection as a makor Metro but that doesn't mean there is no culture and recreation. Omaha has a pretty cool Durham Museum and Union Pacific Museum. Plenty of museums and art gallery's including the Joslyn. The Henry Doorley Zoo is top of the line and always fun to spend a day in. Just outside of Omaha is Mahoney Park and The SAC,(Air and Space Museum). For baseball fans there are no 2 better weeks then when the college world series comes to town. Freedom Park Navy Muesum is fun if you like war crafts. The Pedestrian Bridge connecting Iowa and Nebraska is ok but the Omaha Plaza connected to it is great for the kids. There is plenty of Lewis and Clark activites between Omaha and a short drive south in Nebraska City. There are plenty of bars with live music as well as the new Qwest Center for all entertainment acts. Sports might not be on par with major cities but Omaha has a UFL Pro football team in the Omaha Nighthawks, AAA baseball for the KC Royals,

Climate - 11/25/2010
I grew up in the south. One of the things I like most about the Omaha area (I actually live in Bellevue) is the climate. Yes, it gets very cold in the Winter and it gets very hot in the Summer so you very much look forward to Spring and Fall. I do enjoy the change in seasons.
I also like the small town feel here. Unlike a bigger city you can get from one side of the city to the other in no more than 20-30 minutes. And getting around the country is easier due to the central location. You don't have to get to Epply airport 2-3 hours before a flight, one hour is ususlly more than enough.
Unemployment is low, crime is not terrible, there are several educational institutions and recreational and cultural

Not Perfect But Easy to LIve In - 11/6/2010
I'm always amazed at all the negative comments about every city on this site which proves that life is what you make it. I moved from San Diego (paradise right?) to Omaha 4 years ago. I left great weather, horrible traffic, border problems, high expenses, high unemployment, low paying jobs and a state going bankrupt. Omaha has low unemployment, low cost of housing, top rate restaurants, friendly people, great theatre, nice zoo, expanding downtown, easy to get around in, and good shopping for a city this size. It does not have mountains, or ocean and it does have four seasons which include snow and humidity but not as bad as most points south and east and not gloomy and rainy like many points west and not "hotter than hell" as most points southwest. Property taxes are high and the crime is basically concentrated in specific pockets of town. I've come to the conclusion there is no perfect place just a matter of what you're priorities

I agree this town is lame, but... - 10/24/2010
I am sure there are worse places to live for example; Hell, the middle east, Wyoming.
What bothers me is how this city dont care for the poor and the homeless like they should. We are getting a new stadium that we didnt need, but hundreds are homeless. A stupid bridge was built so people can walk from Omaha to Iowa over the river, but children and women are starving. The values in the city is very rotten
PLUS Property tax is too high, too much time and money is wasted on our roads 12 mo a year, unless your rich your children wont get a good education, the weather really sucks here in Nebraska winter is the arctic, spring is too short, summer is too short. In the winter most roads are imposable to drive on, garbage is limited to only so many bags and wow I could go on forever and ever how much this town sucks.
and moving sadly is not an option for me.

It's the Midwest for better or worse - 4/18/2010
I lived in Omaha for 22 years before moving to San Diego. The move was probably the best thing I did in my life. I personally can't stand the Midwest with the exception of Chicago and the West Coast is much more my style and climate. I do have a new appreciation for Omaha than before. I can see the positives and negatives more clearly than before. Positives are that people are more genuine and honest in Omaha. However, naive, hard headed and simple minded are also qualities most people have as well. Cost of living is quite lower in Omaha, but you also get less in return. Taxes are so high you almost feel as if you break even. There are plenty of things to do in Omaha like the zoo, old market, and some events. However, it gets rather boring after a while. The landscape is dull and depressing, and the weather is hard to predict. Some people love Omaha and think it's the holy grail to a good life. I've heard many tell me I'll move back eventually. Sorry to burst their bubble, but I've

A very polarized town - 2/25/2010
I have lived in 3 different cities. Omaha is my native area. Omaha is not gay friendly! Don't expect to be hired here if you have any sort of feminine characteristics. It's extremely polarized here. If your an atheist you're really an atheist. If you're a democrat you're really a democrat. Most of even the "Liberals" here are closed minded little imps pretending to have their own little subculture. As a test I went to a coffee shop (which sadly is probably the most open minded place to go). I began talking loudly about controversial topics. Most of the people will give me hateful looks and found another seat. The minorities mostly live in SE and NE Omaha. Don't live there! and don't visit after 1 PM. (Statistically speaking) these areas are some of the worst concentrated crime in the nation although the rest of Omaha is virtually crime free. Very few minorities further their education here. (I'm speaking statistically) I have lived in other cities where minorities

Segregated city - 1/28/2010
The Supreme Court ordered the Omaha Public Schools to desegregate in the '70's. The resulting white flight to the Millard Public Schools suburb quadrupled Millard's size in two years. Millard put up a plethora of temporary buildings to accomodate the boon until they could build the new schools. North Omaha and downtown were further segregated as it continued to be African American dominated as it is today and continues to be the highest crime rate area in the city. The vacuum in the tax base for OPS led the district to attempt annexing Millard. But the Millard contingent forced the Unicameral to create a "Learning Community" which in essence, spread the responsiblity for desegregation to all the surrounding schools districts. The Learning Community has limped along in attempts to allow inner city youths to attend the suburban schools. Millard of couse, has very few openings for inner city youths. In fact, the Millard graduation gatherings are whiter than a Klan rally. The disparity

Got out as soon as I could - 1/10/2010
I escaped Comaha after ten years of living here because of the ultra prudish and closed-minded class of people that live in this town. The town is catered to about 30 people that are millionaires and are able to use the things like Qwest Center, the pork-spending bridge, the unnecessary baseball stadium or one of the other frivilous things that gets built here (Midtown Crossing, Aksarben Village, take your pick.) While these things go up, the roads (beware of car-killing potholes), schools, basic public needs and more get neglected. There's a reason why Omaha is in debt as I write this. The weather sucks. It's too cold and snowy to do anything in the winter and too humid and hot to do anything in the summer. The things there are to do here get old very quickly. Austin, where I moved to, is like paradise in comparison. You can actually do stuff in the winter and the people have thoughts of their own, not ones just passed down from their parents. When your biggest claim is that you are

Omaha, NE - 1/1/2010
Omaha really isn't a bad city. It has a lot of chain stores and restaurants that Lincoln doesn't have. The zoo in Omaha is also better than Lincoln's zoo. Omaha also has the Missouri River, while Lincoln doesn't have any rivers. Traffic can be bad and the weather definitely reminds you that you are in the Midwest, but overall Omaha isn't a bad place to
