Not so fun - 10/27/2008
I lived here all my life and I hate the place. It might be a growing city but that doesnt mean the city is getting better. It is in the most conservative state in the country. The people are such bigots. This place is still stuck in 1675. If you are between the ages of 18-30, there is nothing for you to do here. NOTHING!!!! Yes, you will find a bar on about every other corner or what not but they close at 1. Is Nebraska seriously the only state that the bars close at 1? For my jobs I try a lot and i must say that this is the only place I been to where the bars close at 1. You have to cross the bridge to Iowa to the casinos if you want a decent amount of time to drink or to even see a stripper. The old market is LAME. There is no diversity. Everyone is strongly republican and strongly catholic. The public transporttation is horrible. They have a bus system called MAT or Uncle MAT. The bus drivers are rude and they only run about every 1.5 to 2 hours and they end at 10pm. The bus only Read More

Omaha is not my homaha - 7/30/2008
Omaha the city itself is okay. Not great, not terrible, okay. It's what you expect for a city in the Midwest: quiet, bland scenery, unpredictable weather, not a huge number of things to do, conservative vibe, big into beer drinking, steak eating and football.

What gets me worked up about Omaha are the homers. These are the people that consistently brag and boast about how great the city is whenever they can. Typically they are Catholic, attended Creighton University, are from Omaha or a surrounding small town close by, white, middle to upper middle class and have seen little of the world outside of their Nebraska bubble. These are the types that quote stats from Money Magazine and such of how great Omaha is when those magazines with a few exceptions (Austin, San Diego) pick the most boring and characterless cities in the country as the "best places." These people believe the horse crap the Omaha World-Herald writes in their pro-Omaha propaganda newspaper.

Omaha Not as Great as Everyone Will Tell You - 7/2/2008
I moved to Omaha from Minneapolis for college 5 years ago and have been sorely disappointed by the city. The suburban sprawl is ridiculous, and the city is obviously divided along economic and ethnic/racial lines.

The city does not believe in putting money into the downtown area and, as a result, it is rundown and no one visits. The Old Market is popular but tends to be overrun by expensive couture clothing and ritzy restaurants.

The vast majority of the city is big box chains. Locally owned businesses are few and far between.

Most people rave about the low cost of living in Omaha, however, when you factor in all the taxes it does not seem so cheap.

If you tend towards the conservative side politically and socially, love football, and are Catholic you will fit right in. If not, seek somewhere else to Read More

Young Liberals Beware - 6/26/2008
After growing up here until I was 13 (that is to say isolated north of the metro), I though Omaha was okay. Not a great place to live, but okay. Then I moved to Minneapolis for 4 years and experienced what a functional and sustainable city is. I moved back to Omaha for college, and its flaws really stuck out to me. The underdeveloped downtown will soon be juxtaposed by the new monstrosity of a baseball stadium (thanks Fahey), the urban spawl is so bad that East and West Omaha feel like two different cities, and the closemindedness of the city (minus the few hippies that scatter from the public eye like cockroaches in the light) will choke any life you would have outside of up-work-home-tv-bed. Cheap, sure, but is it worth it? I don't think so.Read More

Education - 4/25/2008
I believe Omaha has a lot to offer in Education opportunities. We have three large universities; University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Creighton University. Top notch research hospitals and institutions result in our area from the two medical colleges. Omaha also offers many smaller colleges such as College of St Mary, Methodist College, Bellevue University, Metropolitan Community College, to name a few. For students who want to stay in their hometown, or move to this city, educational opportunities Read More

Omaha - Pros/Cons - 3/20/2008
Pros:
1. Low crime rate
2. Low cost of housing
3. Nice downtown

Cons:
1. Not much to do for a big city
2. Taxes are extremely high due to the presence of wealthy people like Warren Buffett (richest person in the world)
3. There's not enough data on the school system, so I don't know if it's good or Read More

Medium city blues - 3/19/2008
I recently moved out of Omaha, Nebraska down to Fort Worth, Texas. After living in Omaha for five years, I was ready to move on. It's not a bad city, but they have some major issues that need to be worked on in order to leave the medium city rut they are in.

Climate: C

Omaha's climate is extremes. Cold in the winter, hot and humid in the summer. Granted, Fort Worth can have 100 plus degree days, but it only gets very cold on a few occasions. Omaha is very cold in the winter, rainy/stormy in the spring, and hot/humid in the summer. There are a few nice days in the fall and spring that are beautiful, but seem to be few and far between.

Cost of Living: B-

On paper, Omaha looks cheap. However, the taxes, insurance rates and driver registration fees are among the highest in the country. Property values remain steady, meaning if you are looking to sell, you won't get much return on your investment.

Crime: C+
