Comments from a middle-class perspective - 3/14/2008
Omaha is a great city that truly has huge potential, however the downfalls that face Omaha residents can be disconcerting. I'll comment on a few of the categories to give you a good idea of what it is like to live in Omaha, NE.

The CLIMATE is very much so typical of a midwestern city, the winters are not nearly as brutal as they are in Chicago or Minneapolis, but not quite as nice as they are in Kansas City, MO or Dallas, TX. It would be considered a tolerable climate, where the summers are gorgeous and the winters fall between mild and modest.

The COST OF LIVING in Omaha for a typical lower income to middle income household looks good at first glance. Dig deeper though and you'll find some paralyzing stumbling blocks. The property taxes and vehicle registration fees are herrendous!!!! The retail property values have risen tremendously in comparison to household income in the last 10-12 years. Typical expenditures such as food, clothing, gasoline, Read More

Tax - 3/8/2008
I hear you on the taxes but don't you pay for what you get? I've visited Omaha several times and I like it. I currently live in the Gulf Coast. The region is unkempt, high crime, expensive housing, poor education, on and on...one more thing, HURRICANES! Omaha has it's negatives too, harsh winters and taxes. My point, it depends on what your willing to deal with. I love the Gulf Coast it has beatiful waters, nice weather and seafood but when I think about safety I will pay those taxes anyday. Katrina has changed my mind, in due time I am heading Read More

Stable economy, unstable weather - 1/28/2008
I guess you can't have it both ways! Omaha seems to be more recession-proof than other areas of the country. Career opportunities in Computers, communications and military defense work are good. Plus we have two teaching hospitals. This is a great place for your family, if you can take the weather extremes: today's high is 52, tomorrow's high is 16. Not a typo.  Read More

Taxes - 1/17/2008
Note that when comparing cost of living, one significant factor that seems to be missing is the potential impact of high tax rates - real estate, state income taxes and other misc.taxes/fees.

Although housing prices may be lower than comparables in other states, the real estate taxes here are quite high - especially in the newer areas in the lower crime, west side of the city. Expect real estate taxes on a $250K home in these areas to be about $6,300 per year.

In addition, be sure to take into account the state income tax rates and misc fees such as auto licenses, dog licenses, and additional local telecom taxes.

When all of this was taken into consideration, we discovered that what we thought would be a decrease in the cost of living, from Colorado or upstate New York, actually appeared to be about a break-even Read More

glad I left - 1/16/2008
After living in Omaha for 7 years, I moved away from Omaha a year ago, and it was one of the happiest days of my life. On the plus side in Omaha, you’ll find a good school system and the great College World Series. You’ll also love Omaha if you loved the 1980s, because living there is like living in a time warp. On the down side, the mindset is redneck, and Omaha natives are surprisingly arrogant. The crime rate is very high, but on record Omaha’s crime rate is low, because the reporting system is skewed and/or inept. Auto insurance is also low because the police don’t enforce traffic regulations. If you like poor customer service, you’ll love shopping in Omaha. There isn’t much variety from store to store, so for a good shopping experience you have to go to Des Moines, Kansas City or Minneapolis. If you’re wondering why housing prices are so low in Omaha, it’s because most people don’t want to live Read More

taxes - 10/1/2007
The property taxes are one of the highest, they need a lot more police on the force. The city its self is not too bad. The humidity is very bad.
We would like to make a move to somewhere the taxes are alittle more resonable. If you are over 50 its hard to get a job here. The people who have been here all there lives are doing ok. Its if you are a new comer you might have a hard Read More

Omaha expensive? You damn right. - 7/20/2007
Omaha might have cheap cost of living, but then the taxes are outrageous, as are the gas prices and other costs. In the end, it ends up being more expensive than what you get in Read More

Omaha Property Taxes Too High - 6/7/2007
Don't move to Nebraska. The politicians, city officials, and rich business owners receive preferential tax rates while the rest of the taxpayers are hit hard. Two years ago, the County hit me with a 50% property tax increase and this year again with a 30% tax increase..! Why? The County Assessor only received a 3% increase over six years. These rate hikes only make sense when factoring in the misuse of power in government. Omaha already has one of the highest property tax percentages in the nation and it's only a matter of time when their economic and political policies catch up.

I would suggest moving to Iowa where the taxes are lower and less burdensome. I also buy my gas in Iowa because their gas tax is lower, which translates to roughly 10 percent cheaper gas per gallon. It's also a nice place to raise a family, as I know many professionals who commute in the same amount of time it would take to drive from Omaha's suburbs.

Iowa ALSO has more Read More
