Ethnicity in Las Cruces - 5/1/2008
TCU Joe,

I've read your rant and for someone who's entering the PHD program in Chemistry, you haven't got the spelling IQ of a 5th grader. I am an Anglo who grew up down the street here in the Sun City (El Paso) and I find LC quite nice. The racial divide does exist and it has nothing to do with money. It has EVERYTHING to do with perception. And what's sad is that when an Anglo speaks his mind about diversity and offends a minority, he's a racist. Vice-versa? Justifiable in the minds of the ignorant.

My "hood" was 95% Mexican and I ALWAYS notice when I'm in an area where:
1. Mariachi music isn't blaring from someone's car
2. Mexican food isn't a delicacy
3. English is the preferred language of McDonald's servers
4. Good education is a standard, not a luxury

Okay, let 'er rip. Call me names, call me pinche' guero, whatever makes you feel better. I've been a minority in my hometown all my life and it stinks.  Read More

Desert Life - 3/6/2008
Las Cruces is a rapidly growing community with AWESOME weather most of the year. There's a lot to see and do in the area. The biggest problem is you have to drive to do it. The cost of living and great climate make up for it Read More

Property taxes and weather - 1/18/2008
I lived in Palm Springs,Oxnard,Bakersfield, California and Fort Worth, Texas. For me the best place I have ever lived is Las Cruces N.M. dollar for dollar and no it is not hotter than any place that I lived in except Oxnard which is a beach city and way too expensive for a hard working middle clase family to live in, forget about buying a home there. Texas is the worst climate I ever lived in humid, muggy, jungle heat and life threating storms, tornados, baseball size hail, and I ALMOST forgot stupidly expensive property TAXES those idiots in state government rape you if you own a nice home to fund the schools, what about the state lottery that was to help pay for schools. Whose redneck wallets are getting waxed. They tax you $1.50 for every 100.00 your home is worth or 1.5 times 200,000 and on top of that county, city, water, etc,etc I got the hell out of Dodge no thanks Texas plus on top of all that you have to give away your home when you sell it no apreciation, you don't even get the Read More

Las Cruces is Just the Best - 1/15/2008
We moved here from Las Vegas, NV two years ago. I haven't heard that four letter word, people let you into traffic and open doors, that hand gesture used in traffic hasn't been seen and it is just tranquillo!

Located just 40 miles from the El Paso airport we can go anywhere, park our car inexpensively at the airport and it's so much easier than Vegas. Las Cruces has a university, an historical area, good food and it's just perfect. The air is clean and the views are magnificant.Read More

Climate - 1/7/2008
In general, the climate is great (dry, cold winters and wet, warm summers), but the reality is somewhat different. Unlike most people, I find that there is too much sun, and it's quite intense. Summers can be miserable and seem to last forever; the mix of heat and humidity can be overwhelming. Spring winds, with frequent dust storms, can be unbearable. However, there are some exquisite days with moderate temperatures and just the right amount of Read More

DRIVING and PARKING - 12/24/2007
Hi
I recently bought a house in Las Cruces and while I haven't moved yet, I have spent some time there. I love being able to drive with ease from one place to another. The roads are good. I always find parking - FREE parking. I LOVE that! People are friendly. I currently live on the central coast of California - lots of traffic and little to no free Read More

Too much, too fast-an oversell! - 8/5/2007
Unfortunately, our fair city has been monopolized by developers for nearly two plus decades who have wielded the "big ax" of City Development and Growth. Somehow they have been able to convince the right magazines and other media influences that this "once lovely community on the Rio Grande" is the "Best of Everything". The City has had rampant growth with minimal time to step back and breathe. Zoning and plans have changed to almost appease the developers wishes. New retirees have brought in their big dollars from California and northern states to drive costs ridiculously high. The infrastructure, planned for a smaller community, is way behind the growth rate and traffic is becoming unbearable. The local City and County Politicians are not handling the situation as well as they could, being caught between developers who have their insatiable appetite of more and the local populace who want a slower and more thoughtful pace. Wise people would be smart not to be taken in by these "Best Read More

July High temp is closer to 103 degrees, not 97! - 7/2/2007
However, before you freak out, do understand that it is a dry heat, and with very low humidity you really don't feel the heat as much as you do in humid areas. Just stay out of the sun during midday and drink lots of water!Read More

Las Cruces Summer weather is HOT! - 7/1/2007
I can't imagine why this website says our July High temperature is in the high 90's -- right now it is July 1st and we have already been having temps aroudn 103 for over a week! HOWEVER, IT IS A DRY HEAT, SO IT REALLY DOESN'T FEEL AS HOT AS THE SAME TEMPERATURE IN HIGHER HUMIDITY. I really mean that. 95 degrees in coastal California used to knock me over, know here in Las Cruces, NM, I can handle 103 days just fine as long as I stay out of the sun, and drink A LOT of water. I do mean A LOT OF WATER.
Most homes here have evaporative cooling, rather than refrigerated air conditioning, so they dont' get as cool as you would like, but you really do adjust to the summer heat here. We just don't plan outdoor activities in the middle of the day during the summer.

Also, I was surprised they said we only had 292 days of sunshine per year here - I think it must be much higher than that! It hardly ever rains here, except during the monsoon season (yes, that it really Read More
