Guilderland - 7/11/2006
Hello - Sperling's is asking me to comment on where I live during my registration process, so here it goes :-)
Specifically, it's Guilderland where I'm located althought that option isn't available in the drop down menu.
Guilderland has been a nice place for my husband and I to live with our two young boys. The schools are great. Farnsworth is the Middle School my oldest child attends. He enjoys it but more importantly, the Teachers, Principal and Guidance Councelor are only a email away. I like that they are willing to call or meet you for whatever reason.
Guilderland Elementary is the school my younger son attends and the Kindergarten program was very good for him. It was a average sized classroom (22 students) that had plenty of books, activities and a assistant teacher who was equally loved by my son.
As for Guilderland itself, there are plenty of places to eat, shopping (mall right down the road) located around lots of

How Are Home Prices Doing? - 5/24/2006
I have an opportunity to invest in rentals in Albany. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the pros and cons of this. Most interestedin the current rents for 1br or 2br apartments, along with the appreciation rate for multi-unit properties. I know the last few years aren't a good indicator, so I'm more interested in how prices have appreciated this year and prospects for the next few years. How is the job market? How is the local economy?
Thanks in advance for any

Albany Area - 5/21/2006
Albany has a very cold winter and long. The gray clouds roll in at the end of october and stay for six months. Spring time is wonderfull with warm days and cool nights. The scenic view and rolling hills, lakes and streams add to the outdoor experience. Summers can be hot but not as a rule. The albany area has many festive experiences from spring through fall.
I have lived all over the country and I find that the Albany area is a good place to be from may to

Cold winters & poor job growth - 5/14/2006
Sure Upstate NY is scenic but this is not the place to begin a career, the area is in a long-term depression due to lack of new jobs and general government policies/taxation that have crated a stagnant business environment. There are inexpensive homes in upstate NY but unless you are tied to NY with your career you should be looking for cheap houses in the sunny states, I lived in Albany for years and would not go

My take on Albany - 4/5/2006
First let me state that I do not, as of yet, live in Albany. However, I went to college near Albany for years, and spent much time in the Capital District. And I can tell you, I am working as hard as I can to get back there. If you are going to compare Albany to NYC or Philly, you are comparing apples to oranges. Thankfully, Albany has nearly everything that those cities have without all of the problems. I live near Philly right now and I can't wait to leave. Talk about unfriendly people and an ugly downtown! Philly is unsafe and decrepit in every city neighborhood except Center City. Its surrounded by other dying, hopeless places- Chester, Camden (voted highest crime city in US), Wilmington, Reading, Allentown, Trenton, need I say more? All downtown city centers are stuggling nowadays as commerce and people move out to greener pastures. Albany at least is one of the better ones. I am in agreement that we should focus on bringing back our city centers- it is becoming a major

CANNOT WAIT TO MOVE OUT OF THIS HOLE! - 4/3/2006
Moving to Albany has been the biggest mistake of my life: no culture, ugly downtown, very unfriendly and uncultured natives, horrible long winters, cost of heating sky-high (many apartments have only electric heating which costs a fortune during those horrible winters here), expensive and very limited housing. Living here for the past five years for personal reasons has been true hell. Thankfully, I will be moving out this year but will have nightmares about living here for many years to come. For people who used to live before in NYC or Philly it can be a true cultural

How is the job market in Albany at the moment? Ca - 3/29/2006
My husband and I were forced to relocate out of the Capital District in 1995 after pataki cut all the state jobs. We're at a point right now when we have the chance to move again.
We are wondering if the economic climate now holds more hope for employment.
We are educators, trainers, administrators, sales and IT help desk backgrounds.
Thanks,
Becca B.
