1) "Rochester is a great place to live if you're looking for a balance between city life and outdoor activities. The parks and trails are amazing and there's always something to do. The cost of living is also reasonable compared to other cities." - Sarah K.

2) "I've lived in Rochester my whole life and I can say that the winters can be brutal. But the summers make up for it with all the festivals, concerts, and outdoor events. Plus, the food scene here is diverse and delicious." - David T.

Dying City - 8/8/2006
I’m leaving. I was born here, left from 1995 to 2001 (joined the Navy) and came back. Big mistake! Rochester used to have a booming economy and the headquarters of Xerox, Kodak, B&L, French’s, Contadina Foods, Western Union, and more. Now with rising unemployment and crime, once safe neighborhoods are vanishing. I won’t drive my family through areas I used to walk through. This is not to say that Rochester is all bad: it’s not. It still has a great orchestra, museums, and historical sites. I am leaving because it has lost its solid business foundation. And for that I blame high taxes for driving out good Read More

If you're married with kids, this might be an ok city for you. But for singles of all ages, opportunities are extremely limited here! If you don't mind snowy and cold winters... - 4/16/2006
then Rochester is the place. Its summers are between mild and warm, and the fall brings out amazingly beautiful colors. There is no need to go to New England to appreciate the beautiful fall. Also, due to its climate, the nearby Finger Lakes make it a great place for growing certain varieties of wine grapes. For that reason, the Finger Lakes area is great for people who love wine tasting (specially in the fall), with a large amount of vinyards around the lakes. Winters are more for those who love the cold, snow and snow sports. There are two main downhill skiing locations, Bristol and Swain Mountains. There are several trails for cross-country skiing. Snowmobiling is also popular. There is plenty of snow. Luckily, the city (and the whole Monroe county) is well prepared to deal with it. They salt and plow the roads very efficiently. I have to admit that a place with long cold winters is not my kind of place, but for those who don't mind it, Rochester is an excellent place Read More

Rochester- Decent fishing and nightlife - 4/16/2006
I have lived in Rochester, NY for about 8 years. There are nearby streams for trout fishing and the finger lakes are nearby. The night-life is decent and there are many choices for dining out. Few Extremes - 3/6/2006
Have lived in this area all my life except for 4 years in the military.

On average we have over 100 inches of snow every year but that's an average - many years there is much less, many years there is much more. Because we have the infrastructure to hanle it (snow removal equip't, indoor shopping malls, etc.) it is not as bad as it sounds, especially for those who enjoy winter outdoor recreation.

There is a dearth of sunshine, though, overall and summers are typically not endless days of sun and balmy temeratures. (It is hard to make the case for ownership of motorcycles or swimming pools with so many gloomy summer days with cold rain and high temperatures in the 60s!)

The good news is that, with the exception of all that snow, we have few extremes! Average annual days of extremely high or low temperature are few and tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods are almost Read More
