What BestPlaces Users Say about Asheville
Asheville, North Carolina has gained a reputation as a charming and unique city, known for its vibrant arts scene, beautiful natural surroundings, and eclectic community. Located in the western part of the state, it has become a popular destination for tourists and a desirable place to live for many people. However, as with any city, there are varying opinions on what it's like to actually reside there. Below are excerpts from four different user reviews on Best Places, offering insight into their experiences living in Asheville.
- "Asheville is a magical place that has something for everyone. Whether you're into hiking, craft beer, or live music, this city has it all. I love the friendly and accepting community here, and the beautiful mountain views never get old. The only downside is the cost of living can be high, but for me, it's worth it." - Sarah S.
- "I moved to Asheville for the art scene and was not disappointed. There are galleries and studios everywhere, and the street performers add to the creative vibe. The downside is the increase in tourism has driven up housing prices, making it difficult for artists like myself to afford to live here." - Jake P.
- "Having lived in Asheville for 10 years, I've seen a lot of changes. The good: great food, beautiful scenery, and friendly people. The bad: traffic and overcrowding. It's definitely not the small, quaint town it used to be, but it's still a great place to call home." - Emily M.
- "I've lived in Asheville my whole life and while I love it, it's not perfect. The job market can be tough, especially for young people. And the local government seems more focused on catering to tourists than improving the city for its residents. But I can't imagine living anywhere else." - Michael T.

Funny, my family has been in the NC mtns. for over 600 yrs that we can trace with very historical, colorful history, grandma was Cherokee and hid in hills when tribe marched to OK. Response to people who talk about others moving in, that is the way of the world. I took job in NC last yr with gov after been away in military. Good i broke my legs, resigned and left WS as awful, dirty...I had another state tags and so many people with my work there telling me to go back to where i came from? Odd as they moved from TN and RI! and knew i was from NC before military. So many control freaks in the world. I am the youngest family of 11 there in mtns and maybe time to return. I dare any person to tell me i am transplanting or go back ... approach me! If my relatives can tolerate you all newcomers then consider just because somebody moved from somewhere else after YOU did-why do you feel this to be your territory? Maybe that person with the CA or other tag might be returning to where their

What a great place to live...work...and relax in s - 6/24/2006
I moved to Asheville about 20 yrs ago with my wife and kids..We were fortunate to find a nice home( 4200 sq feet...2/3 acre...public utilities..etc.)..only about 4 yrs old..for a very reasonable price of about 130,000. This house now would go for around 400,000. So, housing costs have gone up...but averaged size housing is still not too bad. So many things to say about the area I hardly know where to start!.. So, all I can say is...when you get here....just START!..go out there... hike some trailes of the beautifull BRP( our local code for our own "highway in the sky"... the wondefull Blue Ridge Parkway)...then drop down into a small town like Weaverville( off the OxCreek access road)... have lunch at a neat local place right on Main street WEaverville( pop. only 2500 a true "small town).. at a place like Sunnyside Cafe..or StoneyKnob Cafe...then zip right back into town via the excellent and improved( see the Tennesee border new route via same I-26) on the I-26 connnector...take in a

I am curious how the job situation is in Asheville. My husband I have been sending resumes to bascially all over the state of NC. We got a response to his resume from Asheville. I havent been to Asheville and from what I have read it seems more liberal than other parts of the state. Not that I am a die hard liberal but all I hear is how conservation and churchy NC can be. I was wondering if blue collar jobs are plentiful and if its more of a professional type environment. My husband is a Machinist and I am wondering if anyone knows if there are many opportunites in Asheville for that field. I have to admit I was quite shocked at the housing prices. Compared to other parts of NC, Asheville seems quite high. How is car insurance prices? Thanks for any info.

Asheville, NC - 4/17/2006
Pretty decent climate, though the Summertime is hot and humid except at night, which is when it cools down and becomes a lot nicer. I have yet to live in a place that beats Portland, Oregon's year-round climate. If you can stand the rain (which I personally loved) Portland is the place to be for comfortable, year-round weather.
Regardless, Asheville has a pretty climate. There are lots of service industry and construction jobs in the area, though not ery many tech-related jobs so all of you techies think twice before you move here. ;) The cost of living is not that bad here though so you can live off being a cook or waiting tables...etc..There's low crime here so that's a plus. If you're into bluegrass or "roots rock" this place is killer as far as music goes, otherwise if you're wanting to check out that latest "experiemental/post-rock/drone/psych" band you've been hearing about you'll be very
