Duncan is what you make it! - 11/24/2017
Small towns can be limiting on things to do, but if you look, you can find it. Lawton and OKC, which is not very far, offers more places to eat, shop, and concerts. Duncan has the Simmons Center, which is a state of the art facility for a town of this size. I've lived a few other places and never seen anything this nice! (It offers basketball, racket ball, swimming, exercise classes, a workout gym, and concert venues) The three main places Duncan has to employ people are the school system, the hospital, and Halliburton. The Family Dollar does have a distribution center that employs a few 100 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong on the # of employees). Yes, the pay could be better elsewhere, but probably the cost of living and crime rate is higher. I believe drugs are bad here, but I believe they are bad everywhere right now. There is Duncan Little Theater, Hogsdon Studio (for young children/teens) if you like to act. We do have the Dehydrator, which is a summer bike race that a lot of Read More

If you dont like it LEAVE - 3/13/2011
THEN DO THE REST OF US A FAVOR AND LEAVE! I moved here from California and I absolutely love it here. But I gues that since I am not an ARTSY FARTSY YUPPIE I probably belong here. I have a degree and am a professional with a very good job. I am also into eating right and enjoying the outdoors. The heat does not bother me because I ACTUALLY GO outside - not sit under the airconditoner and complain about how HUMID it is. It sounds to me like you are a bar scene person if you think everyone is Trashy and lazy and uneducated. No coffee shops - well Boo Hoo - cry me a river!! What is the difference between a Coffee shop (loaded with gobs of unnecessary calories) and fast food? You do not have to eat it if you dont want it!! Just say NO!! Read More

terrible place for a single professional - 7/25/2010
Duncan is a terrible place for a single professional. All the 35-40 yr.old women here are grandmothers. THere is a high rate of teenage pregnancy and alcoholism. There is a huge trash problem with illegal dumping. People here know nothing but junk food and a sedentary life. It's boring, unsafe, and just miserable here. It's been in the mid-upper 90's and humid for the past 10 weeks...the weather is awful. I've heard more stories from my patients and customers about family members being murdered by other family members. People are too gun crazy here. People are crazy in general. I can't wait to get Read More

Great Place to live if you're a farm animal or are - 7/25/2010
I reluctantly moved here for work because I couldn't find work in my area of medical expertise. I've been here one year and can't wait to leave! This is a TERRIBLE place for a single professional!! There is NOTHING to do here. As an avid outdoor person who loves to walk my dogs and ride my road bike, I can honestly say this is the most depressing place. There are no sidewalks, the town hardly mows; there are ticks and thorns everywhere; people are lazy and uneducated, they dump trash in the creeks and sides of the roads; the roads are made for tractors, not road bikes; there are no bike shops, NO COFFEE SHOPS; people are not active. They are lazy, overweight, and act like they deserve everything for free. There are some very nice people but a boat load of grumpy, gruff old men and very nasty trashy people. I dont feel safe here.....I've been threatened by a nasty man with a pocket knife and a the property manager at the Greens APt off 27th Street verbally harasses me when I walk down Read More

Overview - 11/28/2009
For a City of nearly 30,000 people there is nothing here. There are three tiney grocery stors and the only real shoping center is wallie world. Two or three years of shoping their for everything from cloths to groceries is enough to make you go nuts. There are several resteraunts a couple are decent but not what I would call good. Their is absolutly nothing to do as far as entertainment. A movie theater were the sound from the neighboring room bleeds through. Large swaths of the town are rather run down. The lay out is as though a drunk took a ruler to the map. Poor planning. The comunity is full of good old boys who like things the way they were and don't want anything changed. So instead the town rots. As far as jobs go if you want minimum wage or to work yourself to death in the oil feild then Duncan is your town. Otherwise stay clear. Also Lawton is worse so don't go their Read More

Small Town Politics - 4/24/2009
Duncan is one of those places where it matters who you're related to and what church you go to more than what you're actually saying or doing. When dealing with many of the long-time citizens of the city, these are the first questions they will ask you and your answer plays an important role in their decision making.

As for 'politics' Duncan is largely right-wing conservative (Republican) even though these are mostly lower economic class people the Democrats try to help. Much of their politics rests on the issues of guns and abortion (they like the former and hate the latter)and their education on these issues comes from Fox News, religion television programming, and their churches.

Stay Away!!!! - 4/24/2009
What a Dump!! Duncan, OK is a virtual vacuum of culture. For a city of this size and its isolated location, this is unfortunate. The highlight of the year is, without a doubt, the Pig Show. While there are a large number of nice parks and lakes, if this isn't your cup of tea you are out of luck.

There are two venues for culture in town, the Stephens County Fair Grounds and the Simmons Center. The fairgrounds hosts standard rural event: rodeos, livestock shows, carnivals and the likes. The Simmons Center occasionally brings in D list entertainment and serves as the town's main recreation center. Other than the above, Walmart is probably the place you are most likely to run into friends and neighbors.

The town has a bowling alley and roller skating rink. I'm told they are open, but from the run down look of them, you would be hard pressed to know this. There are two cinemas: Carmike and another on Main Street. The Carmike, which offers approximately 6 Read More

Very Nice Place to Live - 10/30/2008
I only lived in Duncan a very short time, but it was the nicest place i have ever lived. The people are very kind and wonderful. As far as entertainment you sort of have to create your own. There are 4 lakes, you can fish, ride horses, swim, or take your boat out. There is very little shopping but you are not far from Oklahoma City. The crime rate is 4, average in us is 3, but i never felt unsafe. There seems to be ample jobs available. Very good place to move Read More
