When will the city fathers wake up? - 1/24/2009
It's sad when my colleagues tell me "don't park there" and it's only 2 blocks from the building. They say, "you'll get mugged or worse". It's no idle fear - there have been documented instances among us.

We work downtown at the University. We're stuck here. The University is not about to move.

It's so unsafe that I'm afraid to work after dark. I can't be safe walking to my car even a block from work.

The buildings must remain locked at all times in order to prevent us from being attacked at our workplace.

This is UNBELIEVABLE, UNCONSCIONABLE, and just TOTALLY RIDICULOUS.

If the city of Memphis wanted, really wanted, to do something about this, they could, and would.

Forget all the OTHER problems - racism, poor quality of education, really bad city services, terrible infrastructure.

We just want to be safe in our beds and at our workplaces.

When will the city fathers awake to the Read More

Hot, hot, summers - 12/8/2008
Memphis has beautiful, long Springs with different flowering trees and shrubs everywhere appearing one after another. There are so many tree species that in the fall, first one type of tree changes color, then another. Spring and Fall are beautiful and mild. Winters are mild. Summers are hot, hot, hot! I've never been able to adjust to going outside in the summer, even at night. The heat is balanced by lovely flowers and flowering crepe myrtles everywhere.
The climate is always changing day to day with a series of hot fronts from the south battling cold fronts from the Read More

Relocating to Memphis - 12/3/2008
My husband, my baby and I are relocating to Memphis. Can anyone tell me about any safer neighborhoods in the city (like Midtown maybe??) or are the suburbs the only way to go? I don't really feel like a 'suburb' person but I am looking for a secure place to raise my little boy. Thanks for any input you Read More

Summer is tough - 11/19/2008
Nice spring and fall - especially when the summer doesn't start too early or last too long.
The winters aren't too bad, but I miss the snow some (not driving in it or shovelling it, I'm originally from NE)
Summers can be barely Read More

This is Memphis, watch your step.... - 10/31/2008
Memphis is a Metropolis with a large welfare population. We are crime ridden, have an almost hostile mayor with his own agenda, and lots of crooked politicians. We have a long history of tearing down our historical buildings and putting up fast food franchises. Most citizens prefer to stay inside after dark. We used to have a certain cachet as a funky blues river town, but things are becoming fairly homgenized and bland. We are basically an overgrown two bit town, with no clear vision as to where we are going. Oh yeah,as an added plus, we are located on the New Madrid earthquake Read More

1/3 Live Below the Poverty Line. - 10/9/2008
Need I say more. The crime and cost of living are directly related to poverty levels. I've been to Memphis and do not relish the time there. But, I would visit Graceland Read More

Poor quality of Life in Memphis, TN - 10/6/2008
I have been living in Memphis, TN for about nine months now. I had visited a few times before having permanently translocated from Miami, FL to move in with my parents who have been living here for a few years. At a glance, it may not seem so awful but first impressions may be deceiving. Having grown up in a big city with stuff to do, Memphis is a ghost town. From the obnoxious cops to the early business closures, Memphis offers a lifetime filled with a lingering Read More

What is wrong with this picture? - 9/27/2008
Imagine a place where politicians are convicted of bribery, fraud, and found guilty of sexual misconduct, then serve prison time, only to get re-elected! Now imagine a place where the superintendant of schools is forced to resign for sexual misconduct and then is elected city mayor. Now imagine a family (Ford)so corrupt and powerful that the points made above seem insignificant. Welcome to Memphis, Read More

Too Many Naysayers About Memphis - 8/30/2008
I've lived in Memphis most of my entire life (exception: Military service). I would say that one's opinion of Memphis will coincide with how you view the city in general. There are those that constantly complain/whine about the crime rate, taxes, and political/racial issues; the complainers usually don't do anything to solve/resolve the issues at hand other than run their mouths (in other words, complaining for complaining's sake). Then there are those, such as myself, who completely love this city. Yes, issues do exist; overall this is a GREAT CITY TO LIVE IN. In this day and age most of us who live in cities/urban environments will experience some of the same things to one degree or another. There are some things that happen no matter where you live (even in 'small town America').

Memphis is much better than a lot of places. There are many things to do and experience in this city and the outlining areas. We have parks, museums, festivals, concerts (some free), Read More
