Nashville, Tennessee is known as the "Music City" and is a popular tourist destination for its vibrant music and food scene. However, for those considering living in this city, it's important to get a sense of what the local community thinks about it. Day Care - 3/9/2008
We used the day care Outlook Nashville and were very pleased. It was a non-profit and always seemed to be scraping by but the care was good, the care givers were experienced, and we were pleased with the community of kids and parents.
Outlook merged with the day care First Steps. Six months or so later the Outlook campus was closed. This move was proposed by the executive, formerly of First Steps, that now oversaw both facilities. The reasons given were that safety was compromised, the staff was in need of re-training and that major renovations were required.
We were told that the Outlook facility would open in thee months. The opinion of virtually all parents involved was that the merger was simply a grab at Outlook's deep financial resources that came along with their relatively weak board of directors. Three months later and we still have no word on the opening. There has been no effort to keep the families informed much less the promised updated web site.Read More

THIS IS THE MOST DEPRESSING PLACE I HAVE EVER LIVE - 3/3/2008
The weather here is truly depressing. Since I moved here last June it has been unbearably hot in the Summer and utterly dismal in the winter, with one decent day about every ten days. It snows just enough to make it nasty - and when you combine that with the traffic and Tennessee drivers - getting anywhere is frustrating and difficult. MUSIC CITY my butt!!!!!!!!!!!! I moved here from Tampa/St. Pete - which has more venues and better talent than Nashville will ever have. Nobody REALLY big comes here. Once you get over the initial BS about the "vibe" - it's just another big-small town with a lot of pollution, bad roads and ignorant politics - not to mention a newspaper that only a person with a VERY limited vocabulary could ever enjoy - an art scene that is utterly pathetic - and last - architectural character that has no character - when the most important public building in a city is that silly looking "batman" building - not to mention, neighborhood after neighborhood of overpriced Read More

still unsure - 2/17/2008
We have been in Madison-North Nashville for several months, and still unsure-yet hopeful of what this city has to offer. There is great diversity here in Nashville. However it is hard to penetrate into any group. The friends we do have are transplants to this city.Traffic can be hectic but it is managable. The city prides itself on cleanliness. I enjoy the scenery all around the city.
Crime in our part of the city is a bit more than I would want. Most of the crimes are done by young males. But it is obvious the Education is not a priority here in this city. Yet, the city is trying to instill more into education. I feel even if the schools are improve; those who choose not to comply will still infiltrate into all areas and corrupt others. Overall, We dont feel as if we are in danger, but we looked on tennessean.com and saw the general area of crime in the city along major roadways. I noticed few home invasions, or shootings. Yet the city has great amounts of robberies- All over Read More

I moved to the Nashville area from Charlotte, NC A - 2/5/2008
I'm a single blk woman in my middle 30's. I moved here from the Charlotte area back in August 2006. Is there anything for black people to do here? I don't like country music. I like urban Jazz. I don't like Nascar but I have to admit the fans were fun when they came to Lowe's motor speedway in Concord, NC. And is there more than two radio stations here for black people? What is here? So far I've had to go the ATL for entertainment. And what is here for my kids to do. I have a 2 year old and a 20 year old. The oldest is bored out of his mind Read More

Country Music City - 1/2/2008
I've been in Nashville, TN for about 7 years. I came here for college (Tennessee State University). This is the city to be in if your interest are education, specifically medical, and music, obviously Country. My experience here has been positive. The weather can be weird. Not good for sinus. Summers are humid, winters and springs are always uncertain and rainy. The cost of living is good. If you are not into the Medical and Country music industries you may want to look elsewhere.

A Question - 12/26/2007
I am an under 30 single black woman. My question is, how is the social scene for this demographic? Any comments would be helpful. I am trying to find a great place to relocate to and try to start a family. I am from the midwest(Indiana) so all the segregation/discrimination, conserative bible belt comments don't sway me because I've lived it in Indiana(a southern state in the North) my whole life and this is America, so where doesn't that exist? Once again thank you for your help! Read More

Polically left wishing to relocate - 11/3/2007
The metropolitan pop. of a city is something that you might want to check. Although the city has not grown much, the bedroom communities (surrounding counties) are growing quickly. Many spanish speaking people (not only undocumented, but illegal!) are moving into this area and in southern middle Tennessee. It still is a popular place to visit, people are friendly, the music and sports entertainment are good, restaurants exceptable. It is still a southern and bible believing area, though, and if I was a little left politically, I might want to find a more "friendly" city like Atlanta, Berkeley (Ca), Madison (Wisconsin), or Austin, Texas. If you want a more rural area maybe Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine would be very Read More

I agree with TQ - 10/29/2007
I, too am a Calif. transplant. I have loved the kindness and graciousness of Nashvillians. Having lived in major cosmopolitan U.S. cities over the years I am used to open, respectful and lively debate on issues of politics, religion, etc. Nashville truly is 5 decades behind the rest of the country and even well behind other southern capitals. The beauty is in the scenery and gentility of the people. Once a transplant like me has calmed down from the euphoria of low real estate prices and the ease of getting things done here, then reality sets in. Mediocrity is the standard in too many areas of Nashville life.

There are many universities here with Vanderbilt far and away the finest. However, ask students and faculty of color about their experiences within the Vanderbilt culture and you get the picture. Vanderbilt is isolating, hostile and allows staff and alienated students of color to struggle w/o the honest scrutiny of institutionalized racism.
