Things you should know about Austin before moving - 11/4/2008
1. It's a Republican State
2. Texans consider Texas a separate country; they don't like to be associated with the rest of the USA and think TX is better than any other state. I'm dead serious!
3. Lance Armstrong is the icon of Austin, yet his billion dollar home uses 10% more water than the average family home here. Where's the "green-ness"?
4. The cost of registering your vehicle is at least $120 if you're new to the state. They charge a $90 "new resident tax" plus the cost of registration. What is that??
5. One half to 3/4 of Austinites drive a gas-guzzling truck or SUV. Of that, more than half do not use it for work purposes or hauling anything. More "green-ness" I guess.
6. The total # of executions in TX is 419 since the state reinstated the death penalty using lethal injection instead of elecrocution. The count started in 1982, so 419 people in the last 26 years. Currently, there are 13 people pending execution, just sitting around waiting...It Read More

Austin is not that great! - 11/4/2008
I've lived in PA, NY and NM. I can't wait to get out of Austin. The drivers are so rude, they ride up your bumper even when there's no traffic and they cut you off all the time for no reason. There is absolutely NOTHING to do here unless you like to drink and go to bars downtown. The museums are horrible for such a large town. The only good museum is the History of Texas mus, if you care enough about Texas to walk through a 3 story museum all about them. You'd think there would be a little more cultured down here, but it's all about Texas. The people are relatively nice, but have a lot of money and are stuck up. The downtown traffice sucks when they close a majority of the streets off because of a race, which is EVERY weekend! And the government here stinks too. They keep building huge, expensive homes and shopping centers, while the lower and middle classes have nothing. Everyone drives a huge truck or SUV, even the rich women who don't know how to drive them so don't be tricked into Read More

Hot & Humid - 10/24/2008
Austin is an ok place to live. It's kind of over-hyped as being more than it is. The good: ornery Texans, racial diversity, mild winters except for the occasional ice storm, Tex-Mex and BBQ, the Longhorns, Barton Springs/Zilker, live music. The not so good: plenty of 95 degree/100 percent humidity days; horrible traffic (plus I-35 is a main NAFTA corridor so trucks rumble through non-stop), really high property taxes (mine is 4k a year for a 200k house), mosquitos/roaches/fire ants/termites/fleas/chiggers/poisonous snakes, high allergens (if ya didn't have allergies before moving here, you will!), high level of property crimes, drunk drivers, a mixed public education bag, and rising housing costs. The absolute worst thing about Austin? Just outside of it lies...TEXAS. So I don't leave town much.
All in all, I like living here. It sure beats Houston! Still, I wouldn't mind living someplace like Seattle or Portland. Maybe Read More

Value Packed Austin - 10/9/2008
Austin has one of the hottest real estate markets in the country.

Forbes sited Austin as one of America's top 10 recession-proof cities, but our market is changing. Learn where, how and what to look for.

Even in Austin it is a buyers market, not excluding some the city's "snappiest and consistently" valuable areas, such as Westlake, Tarrytown, Northwest Hills and South Austin.

There is a great deal of speculation in North of the River East Austin so prices are higher than they should be.

Watch where the Artisans settle, they usually raise the bar for an area in due time

Austin Sucks! - 10/6/2008
If given a choice, I highly recommend AGAINST moving to Austin.

The only redeeming quality, is that it has very mild winters, but you can get this from vertually any city in the south.

Austin is supposed to be one of the most liberal cities in Texas, but Austin, is the most RACIST city I have ever been too.

I've lived here for around 3 years, and have been searching for a new job for around a year and a half. I can't wait to get out of Read More

Austin is not cheap - 10/1/2008
Austin is overated!!! Moved here two years ago from AZ. Haven't figured out what they spend our outrageous property tax on. The medians and side roads outside of downtown Austin are not well maintained. There are no major sporting events in this town except for UT, which is full of drunken college kids. Rush hour traffic looks like you were in a city two or three times the size and the Texan way to deal with it, is to build new roads and make commuters pay to drive on them every day, whoopee. Every city has parks and recreational areas for people to enjoy, so I don't know what the big draw is to Austin. As far as attitude, I have run across alot of people who adhere to the "Texas way" and are unwilling to move into the future. So we are choosing to move onto a bigger city, hopefully with more positive experiences and Read More

Why Austin Is the BEST place to live - 9/27/2008
Now I am a little bias because I have lived here my whole life (I now work in the hospital I was born in) but in my opinion Austin is the best place to live by far. I would never consider moving anywhere else. I am not closed minded either, I have traveled to lots of other states. I am also not an uneducated red neck and I do not ride my horse to work as some people think we Texans do. Although we do not have NFL, MLB or NBA teams, it doesn't mean we are a boring city. Who wants all the traffic and noise that comes with that? We do however have a dynamic college football, basketball and baseball team. GO HORNS!!!! It might be hot here in the summer time but most of us native Texans like it hot. When it gets hot, most of us can be found at our beautiful and beloved lakes and rivers. The ones downtown are not the ones you want to swim in though, go futher north and you will find Lake Travis. Yes, Austin is outgrowing itself but that is only because everyone moves here.  Read More
