Austin is lacking in everything - 9/24/2008
OK, so I experienced my first UT game just trying to drive on the streets downtown. They have the University in the middle of the downtown area, so when there is a football game, all the streets are packed with people and you can't go ANYWHERE!!! And it's all day long!!! Not only that, but the city is so unorganized that they have several events on one day, so it makes it harder to get around the city. There is poor public transportation from the suburbs into the city, so you have to drive your car. There are no good museums, zoo or anything worth seeing unless you want to go on 6th St. and drink like everyone else.
It's sad that Austin boasts about how "green" the city is, yet 3/4 of the people here drive gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. The majority of the truck drivers are not using their vehicles for work and the SUV drivers are all wealthy women talking on their cell phones and not paying attention. I've lived in many cities, including Manhattan and Philadelphia and

Anyone who's been here loves it. I have grown up here and still do. Prices have gone up, yes, however, it is worth it. Traffic is a bummer, but you can deal with a good i-pod. There's plenty to do. Never dull. People are friendly and always

Quality of life vs. Bay Area - 8/30/2008
We moved here two years from the SF Bay Area (Los Gatos). I can't believe that you don't rate Austin higher than you do. Compared to the Bay Area, where I lived most of my life, the quality of life here is WAY better. The air is cleaner, the people are universally MUCH friendlier, the cost of living is much lower, and it's by far the best place I've ever seen to raise kids. I'm only sorry we didn't move here

Austin sucks! Don't move here! - 8/20/2008
Austin is way overrated. I just moved graduated from college. Now I'm moving to Colorado. Thank god. Austin sucks! The people there are rude as hell! Yes they say Austin is a friendly city. They forgot to say that it's superficially friendly. The people here are deceitful, conniving, arrogant, ill-mannered, temperamental, inconsiderate, boisterous, uberfriendly, overbearing, and volatile. I worked in customer service here and I absolutely despised it. You can learn a lot about people just by working in retail. Often times that's when their true colors show.
The weather is hotter than hell all the time, too. They still haven't expanded IH-35, and there is nothing to do. The music there sucks. The clubs there suck. The women there are really shallow and conceited. The cost of living there sucks. The wages there suck because they're not inflation adjusted, and there is no culture there.
First of all Austin is not as liberal as everyone says it is. I hate to rain on

friendly town but hot - 8/12/2008
I've lived in Austin, moved away, and come back again. Like the town but the climate is getting to me so I'll probably move again.
The good: Very pretty town with lots of oak trees and hills. Cost of living is rising but still a lot cheaper than anywhere in California or most of the urban Pacific West. A lot of focus on the music and club scene and this town is great for under 40 singles and marrieds. Decent job market, esp. in high tech and the sciences. Good school (UT). No state income tax will raise your current salary by 10%. Housing prices are steady (2008) with an even buyer/seller market. Rents are reasonable unless you're looking for Hyde Park or 78704.
The bad: Divisive local politics which sometimes incapacitates the city government. Transportation infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired--no East/West highways until you are on the outskirts of town and inadequate North/South highways! This makes for insane big city traffic despite

I've found my new home - 8/5/2008
Austin is perfect for me. I am a young college graduate and I love all the opportunities here. Downtown, there are several art galleries, live music every night, interesting bars, and lots of locally owned restaurants. But if you are into the outdoors, there are plenty of spots for hiking, biking, swimming or boating. The people here are mostly liberals. Artists, musicians, actors, and environmentalists make up most of the city. I love
