SO WE DECIDED TO RELOCATE, NOW AT THE TIME WE WERE LOOKING AT PHOENIX IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE A FAMILY ALONG WITH THE GOOD HOME PRICES, OUR OTHER CHOICE WAS AUSTIN,TX BECAUSE AT THE TIME THEY ALSO HAD GOOD HOME PRICES TOO. NOW BECAUSE NIETHER ONE OF US HAD ANY FAMILY IN AUSTIN WE DECIDED TO GO TO PHOENIX BECAUSE MY WIFE HAD A AUNT THAT LIVED IN PHOENIX. BAD CHOICE, THE MINUTE WE GOT OFF THE PLANE THE HOME PRICES SHOT UP THROUGH THE ROOF.LET ALONE PHOENIX HAS NO CULTURE TO OFFER,EVERYBODY AND ANYBODY CAN GET A GUN AND WALK AROUND IN PUBLIC. Not a place...THE place to live - 3/18/2007
I have been in the Austin area for six years and as a military brat I have seen it all and this city is an enigma for a Texas city. Clean air, low cost of living, expansive outdoor recreation, and a cosmopolitan entertainment scence without the attitude. It is nice to have so many educated people in one city as well, which may be why the job market has remained so good and crime is barely a blip on the radar when compared to other cities. Traffic can be a downside, but, a small price to pay. Every lifestyle is avalible, from suburbia, to the growing projects for increased density, or a quiet hill country mini Read More

where not to go... - 3/18/2007
This is a reply to the person moving from Chicago to Austin or Houston.

Stay away from northeast/rundburg area, east, southeast...pretty much anything east of IH-35 in the Austin city limits and you should be fine. There isn't much crime here, but those are the areas where a majority of it takes place.

The northern suburbs of Pflugerville, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Hutto, and Georgetown are nice places with good schools. West and southwest Austin are very scenic and nice, but expensive and far away from most jobs unless you work downtown. Most jobs are in the northern part of the city. Traffic is only bad during the morning and afterwork rush hours. They've opened a few toll roads that have helped traffic a little, but it still gets bad on 35.

The best thing about Austin is that it's a major city but it's still sort of small in size. You can get to most places in 20 or less when traffic isn't Read More

I've visted and don't want to live there. - 3/16/2007
I've visted and looked around Austin extensivelly. Yes it is nice, but I don't want to live there. Way too hot in the summers and lots of traffic congestion. So, I have to let Don know that not everyone wants to live Read More

Where to move in Austin - 3/15/2007
I will be relocating to Austin or Houston from Chicago within the next month. I have 3 young boys and I know nothing about the neighborhoods in Austin. Can someone please tell me where not to go and where to go. I don't know anyone there so I will be moving to a strange place, but that's the best part about it--to me anyways. I need good schools and jobs nearby. please Read More

How is Austin - 3/7/2007
I am responding to all those who are wondering what it's like to live here. I hear the allergies are awful, but my family seems fine except for the occasional hayfever over ragweed or other. I was terrified of "cedar fever", and the fear was worse than the effect. My mother who is allergic to everything and deathly allergic to mold, was fine here (apparently the healthier air wasn't as bad as the pollution of dry Phoenix on her). There are tons of outdoor activities (running, biking, climbing, spelunking, lakes, fishing, bird watching, hiking in woods, etc). I think the weather is personal opinion. I found the summers somewhat hot, but spent every day outside where I could never have done 1/2 that in dry Phoenix. Winter is great, and better than the 100 inches of snow back east. There were some sticky days, but the cool breezes and clear starry skies at night were to die for. Cost of living isn't bad, but property taxes are high (the key, make enough money to where the high Read More

Best City in the USA - 3/7/2007
I have never had a person visit me that didn't wish they lived in Austin. I have traveled all over the USA and have never found a city that comes close to Austin. Great place if you've never been anywhere else.... - 3/4/2007
Most people who live here LOVE it and can't imagine being anywhere else. Austinites believe they have invented dive bars, live music, and a little trail that goes around a small river. But, for those of us who have been around, there's really nothing here that you can't find in many other cities in the US. And if you like breathing clean, allergen-free air, then you may want to count Austin out.
Austin has had some great press, and I've gotta give it to them for knowing how to promote their city. But, after living here almost a year, I can honestly say that it's probably the most over-rated city in the U.S. So, if you've never really been anywhere, or seen any of the truly amazing cities in the U.S., then Austin just may be for Read More
