Austin vs. Round Rock, etc. - 7/26/2006
I've lived in Austin for over 6 years and have lived in Round Rock a couple of those years. Round Rock is its own city North of Austin. It's really more like a suburb of Austin. There are definitely more suburban type people and homes here. Round Rock lacks the culture and character that Austin has. Neither city is really beautiful as far as scenery goes. Real "Austinites" who love Austin would argue that. There are some pretty hike and bike trails and there is zilker gardens and things like that in Austin, but it's far too hot to enjoy being outside here! And once you've seen the famous bat colony come out from under the bridge at dusk, it's really not that big a deal anymore. 6th street is overhyped. Well, you'd like it if you like to get drunk and be around a lot of gross people. The allergies are really difficult here too. I feel it's taken a toll on my immune system. The best things about Austin are that there are a lot of natural/organic minded people. Whole Foods Market and

Austin Review: My 12 Years There - 7/12/2006
Austin was a very unique place when I moved there 12 years ago. The people were great, attractions were never ending, population was perfect, real estate was cheap, and traffic was not a problem. It has grown to the point where it has lost a lot of its charm, but it is still a great place to live. The freeways did not expand at all while the population doubled. They have been working a lot in the last year to help though.
Austin is hot if you are not used to a warm climate. It is not as humid as Houston, so I don't think it is too bad. There are still a lot of things to do in Austin. Real estate is still relatively cheap compared to most of the country and certainly compared to any large city. You can find a 2000 sq. ft. house in South Austin that is whithin 15 mins of downtown for about $160,000. That's tough to do in most large cities. I now commute 50 mins 1-way to Houston.
Having the largest univeristy in the country does mean that salaries are

Small Town Feel - 7/11/2006
Austin has managed to cling on to its small-town feel. Although it is being eroded away, the awareness of this fact has caused long-time residents and businesses to be consciencious of our city and its culture - there are still many places in Austin where Texas' "Friendly State" motto still holds

Allergy Warning - 7/9/2006
It takes about 7 years to develop allergies to mold and pollen in Houston and Austin if you don't have them when you come there. Also, you might develop asthma while there, too. Luckily, I moved back to the northern midwest and all left except for early spring pollen from the trees allergy symptoms. This is not the place to come if you already have allergies or asthma, unfortunately. Just my humble

To Allergies: Austin is called "The Alergy Capitol of the World". I didn't have "allergies" until I came here. Now I'm on nearly continuous meds; some prescription, most OTC. Moulds? We call them "molds" in the states. And yeah, every day of the year -- some worse than others. Just wait for "cedar fever" -- if he has asthma it can become life threatening -- and that ain't no joke. 6,000 people die of asthma each year in America -- no idea how many of them are in Austin. I only know of two personally -- and one I took to the hospital

Please stay in California! - 7/6/2006
I've lived in Denver for several years and watched the Californication take place first hand. Please stay where your at. Texas doesn't need the snobby, uptight, liberal, my way or the highway attitude. I'm not a religious person at all. But the fact that a skating rink has a Christian night doesn't deter me one bit from Round Rock. Too bad you can't do that in one of your California cities. Obviously California is failing, thats why people like you want to move to Colorado and Texas. Bottom line is, if you do move, change your attitude. It's now Texas, not California. Turn up the music, and enjoy. Learn the customs of southern hospitality. Be careful though, you might actually hurt yourself and say hi, or hold a door open for someone in public. I can't wait to get back to Texas. You can have your overrated
