Thinking about moving... - 4/9/2007
My husband and I are thinking about moving to Austin once he finishes school in a couple of years. We are currently living in Los Angeles. He is a native Southern Californian and I am from Northern California, went to school in Texas, and then moved back to Cali.
We are planning on making a trip to Austin this summer - I am convinced that Austin is the place I want to raise our children - he is excited to move but he needs to see Austin before we make a solid decision. Where/what are the best places for him to see so that he gets a great look at what Austin is all about?

Austin is a mecca....for traffic! - 4/6/2007
Austin is the most overrated city in the United States. There is nothing this city has to offer that any other mid or large sized city in the US doesnt also have. The "culture" here is just a bunch of wired up yuppies riding around in there SUV's pretending to be laid back hipsters.
Unless you are in the "High Tech Field" which I guess a lot of people here are, judging from all the California license plates, good luck getting a good paying job. Sure compared to good ol' Cali Austin might seem like cheap livin', but when jobs only pay $10 an hour that 200 thousand dollar house downtown is a little out of your reach. Oh and if you don't live downtown, get ready to have an hour and a half of your day devoted to your daily commute. No one here can drive and inevitably you will be stuck on the highway, behind Miss Break Slammer, while you have Mr. Tailgater so far up your ass it almost hurts! It makes me nervous to take my 4 month old daughter out in this traffic. It is not a

Help for those unfamiliar with Austin, TX - 4/6/2007
I recently came across this forum and it seems a lot of folks have questions about the Austin area neighborhoods, schools, lifestyle, etc. I have lived in Austin for over 10 years in various parts of town. I'd be happy to share my knowledge and experience. As a Realtor I have had the opportunity to work with many clients relocating from other cities and can pass along their opinions as well. Feel free to shoot me an email anytime!

Moved here from California, mixed experience with - 4/1/2007
I moved from California to Dallas, then after 6 months to Austin since a family member bought a house here. While everyone insisted Austin was the greatest place ever, I had reservations being as that I saw very bad traffic and in my opinion the downtown is about half hotels and there is a lack of corporate HQs as compared to say Dallas. That said, AUstin has very low unemployment and is very safe even at night compared with Dallas, hands down better than Sacramento, CA and much nicer people. Its not the total package but its pretty

I've lived here 18 years - 3/31/2007
Austin has a lot to offer. I'm a nature person so I can't speak to the night life here. However, if you're into exploring nature and enjoying the free things of life you'll love it here. There's Barton Springs, a huge natural swimming pool consisting of fresh, cold spring water bubbling up from the pool floor. also Hamilton Pool which is another natural pool surrounded by cliff walls where waterfalls trickle into the pool. Schools of large fish can easily be seen and if you stand real still in the pool, they will surround you and nudge against your legs. After a hard rain and overflowing riverbeds, I'll find dozens of shell fossils that have washed onto the land.
The down side is, I've been looking for work for nearly a year. So if you're looking for a job in Austin research the type of companies here before

Where to live in Austin - 3/30/2007
This is in response to Ray moving from Chicago. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods where you can raise your children and have them go to good schools. The best thing is one can still buy a nice home for under 200K. Ray, email me, I am a Realtor and I can

Moved from Denver, Colorado, what a change! - 3/26/2007
I don't regret one second leaving Denver, Colorado. Austin is beautiful, very lush! I'm sorry, but the mile high dry air was getting to me, so was the crime, housing, infastructure, and peoples attitude. The people here are great. The only problem I've encountered was the traffic, but it wasn't nearly as bad as Denver. The only issue I've heard of here is some of the people who moved here. Ironically, yesterday, while driving, this BMW was going 30 mile an hour over the speed limit cutting through traffic. I pulled up next to him and noticed the California tags. I hope they don't ruin this beautiful city and atmosphere like they did Colorado. Otherwise, I can't complain. Here, you can still afford a house. I'll take the high property taxes any day over a state income tax. Say what you want, but the roads in Texas are much better than Colorado's. Tuition at colleges, is much lower than Colorado's, so is gas, insurance, food, etc. After doing some research and if you factor in all the

Austin - 3/24/2007
I have visited Austin pretty much every summer since I was a baby. I went to undergrad hear from 1996 to 2000 and am finishing up my second masters at UT. I have lived here since 2003 and am about to move. I have seen Austin change over 30 years. I must say that Austin does have a good publicist, because when I tell people I'm from here, they gush about how great it is. But it is no better or worse than any other middle size city bursting at the seems.
1. If you live in the city limits, you need to think about crime. Living near campus or where students are can be harry. Students tend to be easy targets. Certain areas of Austin are a little rough, but I grew up in rough neighborhood, and they could be a lot worse (Southeast Austin, North Rundberg, parts of East Austin). Cost of living has become more exurbant in the past 10 years.
2. Democrate, Republican, they are all pretty much different heads on the same beast. Just remember to wave when someone
