What BestPlaces Users Say about Haymarket

Background: Haymarket is a small town located in Virginia, known for its rural charm and historic downtown area. It has a population of around 2,500 people and is considered a family-friendly community with highly rated public schools. However, some people have mixed opinions about living in Haymarket, as seen in the user reviews on Best Places.

Haymarket has received a lot of positive feedback from residents who enjoy the small-town feel and friendly community. According to Mary, "I absolutely love living in Haymarket! It's a close-knit community where everyone knows each other and looks out for one another." Similarly, Sarah shares, "Haymarket has a great sense of community and there are always fun events happening downtown."

On the other hand, some users have mentioned concerns about the cost of living in Haymarket. John states, "The cost of living in Haymarket is quite high, especially for housing. It's difficult to find affordable options in this area." Another user, Emily, adds, "While I enjoy the peacefulness of living in Haymarket, the lack of job opportunities is a major downside. I have to commute to a nearby city for work."

Despite these concerns, many users still appreciate the unique charm of Haymarket. As Jane mentions, "Living in Haymarket feels like stepping back in time. The old buildings and quaint shops make it a charming place to call home." Overall, it seems that while there are some drawbacks to living in Haymarket, the sense of community and small-town charm make it a desirable place for many residents.

Low Crime Area - 9/29/2008
We have lived in Haymarket, VA for over 30 years and feel as comfortable with safety and our general well being as we did the day we moved from the city to the burbs. Even though the city is catching up to Haymarket, the atmospherics of the area and our individual safety concerns are still attractive elements. We now live in a retirement community +55, in Haymarket, VA and feel as good about it as Read More

Booming area - 6/25/2008
I've lived all over the country (CA, SC, RI, WI, etc) but have settled in Haymarket for the last 20 years. Raised my family here. The place is booming, unlike I've ever seen. Our small-town atmosphere has nearly disappeared.
The schools are GREAT, however, and I firmly believe this is the place to get the best education. The county is rated as one of the "best for the money" districts. The opportunities for students are always growing; nearly every school has some sort of specialty -- IT programs, IB, Cambridge, foreign language, etc -- and students can self-select the program they want.
Houses are expensive in the new neighborhoods, but the older and smaller communities still have the small-town feel. Many of the town's new-comers are a bit stuffy, but people in our neighborhood still wave as they drive down the street.
Although there isn't a ton for kids to do besides their sports teams (and there are TONS of those), you can always find something within a Read More

Going Broke - 6/12/2007
I was born in Tennessee, grew up in Pennsylvania and went to college in Iowa. Cost of living is the most expensive, homes are outrageously expensive and the people are in my experience very rude. With it being such a melting pot area this area brings lots of different types of people, most of which work in the DC area. If you are looking for a friendly area with lots to do you'll only get 1/2 of that here -plenty to do within a 30 minute drive, but bring a friend cause you wont make one around Read More
