All Four Seasons.... - 7/17/2006
I've been in Virginia Beach since the Navy brought me here in 1993. I have seen everything from hi 90 degree weather to hurricanes to Nor-Easters to snow and below freezing temperatures. When it's hot, it's also VERY humid. This place has all the seasons and then

Great place to live, if you don't have to drive. - 7/15/2006
Virginia Beach is the largest populated city in Virginia with 450,000 people and the area know as Hampton Road (6-cities, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, New Port News, and Suffolk) contains 1.3 million people. The Hampton Roads area is the largest metropolitan area without a major sport team. The beach and a stable economy play into the popularity of the area. The military bases make the city attractive for military retiree. All these items and the weather make Virginia Beach and the surrounding area an idea place to raise a family. The steady migration of Northerners from New York and other places north has made a tremendous difference in people settling in this region. The state of Virginia has not been able to make in roads with the infrastructure dealing with roads. The area is surround by tunnels and during any time of the day there can be a backup on any of the roads connecting the cities. Grid lot can be a very real

LEAVING VIRGINIA BEACH..... - 7/6/2006
I am relocating from Virginia Beach to Charlotte, NC this fall for many reasons. Virginia Beach which is part of 7 cities along with Chesapeake,Norfolk,Hampton, Newport News, Yorktown and Williamsburg. It is a tourist area so the summers here are CRAZY with people visiting and people already living here all together on the road at the same time it is a mess! And it is catered to the military by the way. I do like living near the parks and the beach but the cost of living is crazy for a decent apartment it cost about 800 to a 1000 for a 1 bedroom, jobs here are hard to get again if you are not in the military they don't pay much. You might get lucky and make just enough. If you are in a regular field like computers and such you will get rape of your skills in this area because you will not get paid much! I do graphic design for a marketing company and well I could get paid more in another area! The cost of living here is crazy period! If you get a government job you may get lucky but my

Va Beach/Hampton Roads - 6/24/2006
I've lived in Virginia Beach for the majority of my life and I would say that like any other place, this city has its pros and cons. I've read the other comments on this city that have mentioned high drug use and crime. Every city has their "bad areas" and Virginia Beach is no exception, however that does not describe the majority of the city. Although the oceanfront does get exceptionally crowded during tourist season, they take care of their locals, providing large discounts on parking ($1 vs $7.00-$10). What I have always found to be one of the best aspects of Virginia Beach, or the Hampton Roads area in general, is that it allows its residence's to experience very different environments. If you are in the mood to go to the beach one day, you are always welcome to Virginia Beach, and if you want to take a stroll downtown, Downtown Norfolk is only 10-15 minutes away using the interstate. There's tons of nature trails for those who are into those kinds of things, history

Not bad but not great.............. - 6/22/2006
I've lived in Va. Beach since 1988. The cost of living-particularly housing- has skyrocketed-in the past couple of years. Our family makes over 150k per year and if required to buy our own home today, we could not afford it. There are no complaints about our neighborhood which is 5 minutes from the beach and is older and established with TREES. But in the 80's alot of cheap tract housing proliferated and now those areas are in serious decline, yet for middle income folks, the only way to afford to move to this region would be to purchase there.
Va. Beach never met a developer it didn't love. Developers rule here and that means rampant overbuilding, many of it poorly planned, overpriced and shoddily built (more so in the past). Ecological and aesthetic factors are routinely overruled in favor of more overpriced housing. Sprawl is another problem with the rural area of Va. Beach in serious trouble, the development line being moved further and further back in favor of the

Not what it's cracked up to be - 6/13/2006
I lived in the Kempsville borough of Virginia Beach in 1997 and I was disappointed by the gang related crime and neighborhood blight around Salem and Indian River Road. First of all, the majority of Virginia Beach is no where near the water, most people live inland, into crowded and identical subdivisions with paper thin walls built in the 1970s and 80s. Virginia Beach was very boring and anything of interest you have to jump on Interstate 64 to get to including basic libraries and hospitals. Most Kids in Virginia Beach have nothing to do but join gangs and commit pety property crimes such as vandalism and robbery. The gangs at Salem High School pressured my friends out of the area, one left Va Beach for Norfolk. By the way DONT LIVE IN GREEN RUN. Drugs are very rampant among the youth of Virginia Beach and some High Schools sell them in lockers like Cox and Salem High School. Virginia Beach is not what its cracked up to be and anyone living there should be prepared for big city
