People are "Nice" but not "Warm" - 11/1/2006
I'm from the midwest and I do have to agree with people here with my own twist. People in Seattle aren't mean or rude, they're just not very outgoing or warm. In many other areas of the country you have people who invite you over to their house, or out to dinner, and to just generally hang out on a regular basis. Here, that is the exception, not the rule, in my humble opinion. I have been here for 5 years and I notice a tremendous difference in how people approach life here compared to the midwest. Both have their benefits and draw-backs, but I generally miss the warm kindness and hospitality of Midwesterners. Someday I might go back, but for now I'll enjoy the culture, diversity and beautiful scenery of

RE: Need some relocation advice... - 11/1/2006
Hi Joseph,
I moved here from Wisconsin 5 years ago. Seattle is generally very mild. The weather isn't as distinct as the midwest where you get four full seasons. Seattle has grey clouds and drizzly weather for 8-9 months of the year.
It does get warmer in the Summer, but sometimes not until June or July. It starts cooling off sometime in September or October and USUALLY doesn't get cooler than 30 degrees in January-March. On average, during the 8-9 months of drizzle, it's probably 40-50 degrees. It does only snow once a year and when it does the city shuts down (lots of steep streets and no consisten snow removal system) - but it usually melts off by noon.
And another poster is right - there's no AC here in the summer. So when it does get hot for one month of the year, it can be kinda miserable. Thankfully it's not generally humid here due to the coastal breezes.
If you want snow, there are lots of places to visit for it (if

Cost of living - 10/27/2006
Seattle is an okay place to relocate if you are from another state/city with a high cost of living. People from NYC and California usually acclimate very well to Seattle. The cost of living here is slightly below that of NYC and Cali.
Be cautioned if you're from somewhere with a modest cost of living. You will be in shock as I have been since I lived in the mid-west for more than 30 years. I cannot get used to the price of everything here. It is twice as much as I'm used to.
I am in search of somewhere else. A place with low crime, cost of living, unemployment, etc. I will most likely be going back to the mid-west or the

Seattle Residents Aren't So Much Rude, but Instead - 10/26/2006
I wanted to post this is response to some of have argued that Seattle-ites residents are rude. I've lived here for about 8 years now, and I used to think the residents are rude. But after some thought, it now seems to me Seattle-ites aren't rude, but instead tend to be self-absorbed.
I think there are numerous factors to explain this, and part of it is the weather (rain). But I think it has more to do with the change in in the populace from working class to professional. Seattle is now largely dominated by career-oriented professionals who are often so busy they don't socialize much outside of their coworkers or family. It seems most Seattle-ites are nearly constantly busy, and don't have time for being cordial. Even when they engage in recreational activities, they like to be busy, perhaps out of

"always green"? - 10/26/2006
To whoever said Seattle is always green...I would say that's a myth. It's more of a brownish yellow in the summer. But hey, dry summers are the only reason the weather here is tolerable.
From May thru October the climate is almost picture-perfect. For the other half of the year it is damp, cloudy and chilly (but of course it is fairly

Contrary to what some people seem to belive... - 10/16/2006
Seattle is not at all unsociable. If you find the right neighborhood you will also find that everyone is very friendly. Where I live (Wallingford, close to the U district) everyone is very nice, always says "hi", stops to talk and in general very friendly. I have noticed many posts that we are "unfriendly" and "rude". That is untrue. Everyone I know always says "please" and "thank you". There are some not as nice neighborhoods, but they are in the minority. With my little rant out of the way, I'll tell you the things I love about Seattle. There's great food. Lots of ethnic food, really anything you can think of you'll probably be able to find. There's so many different kinds of music. You can find just about any genre here, and there are some great unheard of bands. The people. I love everyone. It's really easy to make friends and everyone is nice. The cashier at the Starbucks I go to remembers everyone and asks about their lives and is really good at cheering people up. I've found

It's All Relative - 10/1/2006
I have been reading comments from many different cities on this website and there seems to be a trend going on here. Most negativity posted here about individual places, fall across all cities: drug problems, crime, housing costs, people's bad attitudes, weather, political and social attributes, ect. - The more I read, the more I realize that the only way you can truly figure out if the city is worth checking out, is to actually go there and visit it firsthand.
I have lived in a number of different cities across the USA mostly on the West Coast. I currently reside in LA. From reading other’s posts, people are trying to convince you if the city is bad, or not. Just lay down some of you own observances, and let people decide for themselves.
With that said, I lived in Seattle for 12 years, 8 of which were in the Denny Regrade area. I worked in Belltown and walked to work daily. For those of you who are reading this post, the areas I mentioned are in the heart of the city.

Need some relocation advice... - 9/30/2006
I'm planning on relocating to either Seattle or the Twin Cities. Right now Seattle is winning, so to speak, but I'm a bit concerned about the climate. I enjoy a brisk winter and a warm summer - so how often does it snow in Seattle? And what about the summer - does it ever really warm up? Thanks!
