Seattle or Portland?? - 6/3/2008
My husband and I just found out that his job will be transferring him to either Seattle, WA or Portland, OR. Both of us have lived in Phoenix all our lives so this will be quite a change. I should add that we are looking forward to meeting new and different people and experiencing new things to do that will be different from Phoenix.
I have been to the Seattle area many times (my parent live on Whidbey Island)and I think it's an amazing city all-around. I lived in Eugene, OR for about 4 months when I was in middle school and while there, I visited Portland for about 2 days. It too was a beautiful place but it seemed to be a bit slower-paced and not as hustle and bustle as Seattle. I was 13 during this point so it's a bit hard to remember.
I think the people in both cities are so interesting and friendly for sure. I also think both places will bring something different to the table and will be really different from the southwest area where we currently live.

My Favorite City - 6/1/2008
Seattle is possibly my favorite city in the United States, next to San Francisco. Sure, people say Seattle is too rainy, or too this, or too that, but every city has it's drawbacks and Seattle's con list is much shorter than the pro list. My older brother moved to Seattle to work for Microsoft and had trouble adjusting to the rain (we're from Las Vegas), however, he has lived there for six years now and absolutely loves it. I am planning on moving there in December when I graduate from college but I have spent summers, Christmases, And many other times in Seattle. The city it absolutely gorgeous and the rain is easy to get used to. Trust me when I say that it's much better than being caught in huge snowstorms or in the 120 degree Vegas heat. Plus, summers in Seattle are absolutely gorgeous, like nothing I've ever seen. The city is green and in bloom all the time, and well taken care of. The views on a clear day are outstanding and the area offers so much to do. My friends and family

Weather - 5/15/2008
Yes it is true, while the good days are excellent, the temperatures moderate, but, there are few 'good' days. Perhaps less than 80 or so, that can be called Sunny (not the partial afternoon sun that we are used to and get excited about, but full on sun). Can't hardly grow a tomato with the short summer. :P
One comment on 'bestplaces.com' and their "comfort index". It clearly states "have you ever noticed that nobody complains about the weather being cold and humid" Umm, well, they must never have asked a place that gets cold and humid. :D. Just like a "dry heat", a "wet cold" is quite different. It may never get frigid in Seattle, but 35degF sure feels more like 15degF due to the moisture. Seattle folks complain about the cold at a much higher temp than others, due to the moisture sinking into their bones.

Rain Rain Go Away - 5/10/2008
I really love everything about Seattle, the culture, the coffee, the close mountains, the technology companies, but the rain is really draining. I think I have SAD. I've been here for 8 years and it gets worse every year. I need to take vacations in sunny climes every winter to avoid the blues. Even with a lightbox, a dawn simulator, an adjusted diet and excercise, I always feel better after coming back from a sunny place. If they can Move Seattle to Hawaii I'm there!

get used to it! - 4/16/2008
The whole area is beautiful, but you must be prepared for a couple of things. The joke is that Seattle is so tough, that even the sun doesn't come here. The second thing is a phenomenon called "Seattle Freeze." Go to You Tube to see some documentaries on it. The people here are polite but not very friendly. "Let's get together sometime," really means "get away from me." You must be prepared to have NO friends here for a loooooong time, unless you already know people out here already before you move here. I cannot emphasize this enough. The weather is gloomy, the people pretentious and gloomier, and you will need to deal with the isolation and gloominess yourself. If you can handle both, then you will be
