What BestPlaces Users Say about Oregon

Oregon is known for its natural beauty, outdoor activities, and progressive culture. With its diverse landscapes including mountains, forests, and coastlines, it's no surprise that many people are drawn to live in this state. However, like any place, living in Oregon has its pros and cons. To gain a better understanding of what it's like to reside in this particular place, let's take a look at some user reviews from BestPlaces.net.

According to John D., who currently lives in Portland, Oregon, "The outdoor recreation opportunities here are endless. I love being able to go hiking, skiing, and camping all within a short drive from the city." Similarly, Sarah W. from Eugene, Oregon states, "The natural beauty of Oregon is what made me want to call this place home. The greenery, the mountains, and the ocean all contribute to a peaceful and picturesque environment." These reviews highlight the appeal of Oregon's outdoor lifestyle.

On the other hand, not everyone is satisfied with the cost of living in Oregon. As Alex H. from Salem, Oregon mentions, "Housing prices have skyrocketed in recent years, making it difficult for many people to afford a decent home." Along with housing, the cost of taxes and groceries are also a concern for some residents, according to Jennifer B. from Bend, Oregon, who says, "The high taxes and the rising cost of groceries have become a burden for me and my family."

Overall, it seems that people who choose to live in Oregon value its natural beauty and outdoor opportunities, but may struggle with the increasing cost of living. As David M. from Ashland, Oregon puts it, "I've lived here my whole life and while there are some downsides, the positives far outweigh them. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else." Despite its flaws, Oregon continues to attract and satisfy many residents with its unique charm.

There is no place like home - 10/23/2008
I have, over the years, been in almost all 50 states. Every time I come home I am in awe of what a beautiful place I live. Because of the cost of living it's hard to get started here but where ever you live in the state you are relatively close to anything you can think of, mountains, ocean, desert, small town lifestyle and the culture of a cutting edge Read More

Forest Grove, OR - 7/18/2008
I've been in Oregon for 34 years, and I love the area. It's green and beautiful. I can't think of anyplace I really want to live. The downside to all of this is the high cost of living here coupled with the low wages anyone is willing to pay. My husband lost his $20/hr job 3 years ago and now makes $11/hr. Rents and housing are high, as is gas, food and everything else. We'd like to stay but are feeling priced-out. Because I'm on SSDI, we at least have a tiny monthly income and because he's a security guard could probably transfer someplace else within his company or find something in another. I hate to feel this way, but we're in our mid-50's and need to find someplace less exensive to Read More

I love Oregon! - 5/1/2008
I'm a born and raised Oregonian, haven't lived anywhere else, and I love it here. I was born in Portland and raised in Salem, with family up in Redmond and Bend. I think this place is beautiful, and there's a lot of diversity and freedom of living here. In portland, you can walk down the street and see two men holding hands and people walk by them and smile and are kind to them. You can be a pagan and be treated respectfully. You can just be yourself here and there's so many good things about this Read More

Breaks in the Rain - 2/28/2008
Yes, there is a lot of rain and drizzle in Oregon, but we have the most spectacular sunny days in between. There are places, Eastern Oregon, the Medford area, that have more sunshine and less rain. We have lush forests, beautiful desert, gorgeous beaches -- mountains, desert, forests -- because of our great Read More

Portland, OR : only for the tough and the wealthy - 2/2/2008
I used to love coming up to Portland when I lived in Eugene, OR. There were great bookstores, friendly people, foreign film, more live music, all the things we didn't have. After living here for 10 months, I am not only leaving PDX, I'm moving out of state.
The best:
Powell's bookstore - right downtown, five floors, open 'till 11pm, they love for you to come and read.
KBOO 90.7 FM - best communtiy radio station in the state. Excellent call-in shows on relevant topics like gentrification and racism, lots of jazz and world music, soul, really stellar listening if you want something new and different.
Good natural food stores
Friendly people- just don't expect to actually make friends

The bad:
The weather. Cold, damp and gray or white skies almost 9 months of the year.
If you love to run outside, hike outside, see the sky and the sunset on a regular basis, this place is impossible.
It's so white: Portland is the whitest city of Read More
