What BestPlaces Users Say about Wisconsin

Wisconsin is a Midwestern state known for its natural beauty, thriving dairy industry, and friendly people. It is also home to many vibrant cities and charming towns, making it a popular place to live. To better understand the experiences of those who have chosen to call Wisconsin home, I have summarized and included user reviews from BestPlaces.net about living in this particular state.

According to "John D," Wisconsin offers "a great quality of life with safe communities and friendly people." "Mark B" also emphasizes the welcoming atmosphere, saying, "People are very friendly and down to earth here." On the other hand, "Samantha M" points out the state's harsh winters, stating, "The weather can be brutal at times, but the beauty of the state makes up for it." Despite the cold, "Katie S" notes that Wisconsin has "amazing outdoor activities and beautiful scenery," making it a great place for those who love the outdoors. Overall, it seems that the friendly people and natural beauty of Wisconsin are major draws for those who live there.

Can't retire here! - 7/4/2006
Wisconsin is a beautiful state with lovely hills and forests. However, if you are a middle class working person, you will never be able to retire in this state! Although we only pay 5.6% in sales tax, our property taxes are one of the highest in the nation. We have a $78,000.00 home with taxes of $1,600/year. We also have the 2nd highest gas tax in the nation. We are averaging around $3.19/gallon for unleaded right now. The streets in Milwaukee are breaking apart and the park system is begging for money to keep our 48 county pools open.
I hate the thought of leaving Wisconsin when we retire (I was born here and have never lived anywhere else), however, after looking at Tennessee and Arkansas, there is no way we can stay and continue to pay the ever rising taxes in this state.
Come visit Wisconsin! Winter offers wonderful skiing and summer gives you the best of fishing and resorts. Maybe with an increase in tourism, we can see some tax Read More

Outrageous taxes - for What? - 5/28/2006
I met my wife in 1967 in Milwaukee while stationed with the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill. After leaving the service, I lived in Milwaukee for six years in the early 70's. I moved to the San Diego area in 1976, but have kept track of the place ever since departing. The taxes, particularly the property taxes for the city, county, and state are so outrageous that any positives are quickly overridden. My property taxes for the 73-74 year rose an incredible 50%! The governments at the city and county level seem corrupt, a shadow of Chicago. The pension system is broken and drags the area down. Even the people aren't particularly friendly, as they seemed in the late 60's. (Maybe I've just been going to the wrong places). It's probably all related. The folks feel trapped, with no where to turn. And at least Milwaukee County is mostly liberal/Democratic, and we know how much fun that bunch can be!
The list has no end, so I better stop. Milwaukee is on the slide, and it's a Read More
