I live in a condo that has a very active social committee. People are friendly. It's not as vibrant as living in DC but I certainly feel safe during the day. The one mile walk from rt 7 down Columbia Pike at night is something I don't do - I'm 60. Nice restaurants, bike paths and walking trails.
