Hampden is a blue collar mostly white enclave in the center of black Baltimore. It's funky and individual. Lots of neat artistic people. Beware the old-timers who can be racist and often seem to embody white trash essence. On the other hand there is no real violent crime. Much safer than most of Baltimore. Petty stuff, prositution and individual drug use, alcoholism are common. But one feels safe. Nice old houses - ours was built in 1852.
