Review of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

A shame
Star Rating - 12/13/2008
Baton Rouge was once a beautiful and friendly place. With a population of around 40,000 people and a present, but subdued crime rate.

Now Baton Rouge has a population of nearly 230,000, mostly New Orleans folk that fled here, and the city is now filthy, crime infested, crowded and rude. My Baton Rouge has been stolen from me.

I am not knowledgeable about the schooling, however, the economy seems to be going strong right now. There are many new businesses opening, and old jobs are still available. Unfortunately the cost of living has gone up drastically.

The good is, even during this time of economic downturn in America, Baton Rouge is doing fine.

The bad is, Baton Rouge is now just as bad as New Orleans with it's crime and low morals, due to the population increase.

Stolen for sure, a real shame when you can't even ride on the streets your great grandparents took so much pride in living there and today there is no pride in ownership only crime.a shame when you a visiting your grandparent grave in which used to be a great area in Baton Rouge and today you are intimidated going visit your loved ones because of the crime then you look across the street at the old Leo's skating ring your parents didn't think twice about dropping you off for 4 hours and today as an adult you wouldn't want to stand in front of it for 4 minutes. The people have left their heritage behind by moving the the outskirts of town building new towns eventually there will be no more areas to run and people will realize they should have insisted on governments help in preserving there forgotten heritage

Where do these figures come from? When I lived there (1996-2000), there were over 350,000 people in East BR Parish (and 227,000 in Baton Rouge proper). So are we talking 50 years ago or something? If so, the U.S. population has doubled since 1972 so this is happening everywhere. It's life. Deal with it. And quit having babies. BTW, I agree with you that NOLA is a rathole and the addition of NOLA people to BRLA is not a positive development.

The city itself has pretty much been in the 200 thousand plus area since 1970. The crime rate in the last ten years has either been steady or dropping. Most of the Katrina victims are gone so let's get passed that. The economy is doing great and housing is still affordable. Depends on what area you live in will determine how good the public schools are but the private ones are excellent and LSU and Southern are top notch! The Community College is also one of the best in the nation.
