Review of Brevard, North Carolina

Brevard's mild climate and mountain views have turned it into a summer home and tourist mecca. Housing prices have soared. Unfortunately, over the last 4 years, the 2 main industiral plants have closed leaving 1,000 locals out of jobs. The preview here says jobs are good, but it is a false statistic. Many of the locals are working 2 or 3 jobs to keep their homes and cars. Property values are now so high that the locals cannot afford land or a house if they didn't already own one. They are resentful and suspicious of the money-hungry developers and their clients. It's a sad situation.
The only redemption is that nearly 1/2 the county (Transylvania) is in National Forest, State Forest, or State Park.
Brevard city limits is only about 8,000, not the 16,000 listed. That is merely the number of people receiving mail out of the Brevard Post Office.

THe good news - mountain folks are having to lower housing prices because there is no demand for Brevard anymore. There is now plenty of affordable housing there. If beautiful houses in Asheville aren't selling, why would anyone move to Brevard? It is a cute town, and feels quaint, but isn't this what every other mountain town is? The main street has overpriced restaurants that were disappointing. I can understand some of the high cost because trucks have to drive way up into the mountains to deliver, but still does not make total sense. We did not find good restaurants anywhere around Brevard, but a drive to Asheville solves that problem. There was a good lunch buffet way up Country Club Road, but I have heard that it closed (sad!). There are several good lunch/sandwich places around Broad Street downtown, with nice people working there. I think that Brevard needs to get the bulldozer over part of the town, rebuild on the plowed over land with something new and nice, and they would attract more people to live there. Looks like the population has dwindled over the past 10 years.
