Matthew, I am going out on a limb and say (hope?) you must be very young.
You came here for work but can't wait to get out of here. So, you took a job which requires you to live in a situation you clearly loathe. What kind of "not very intelligent" person does that? I agree with you, you aren't a rocket scientist. Everything you described, no shopping choices, nothing for young people to do, etc., is characteristic of a small town. The heat, lack of trees, etc., is characteristic of the desert. Now, here is something you seem to be in denial of: you chose to move to a small, desert town.
As for the sky-rocketing population at times, mostly people from California, they see something you don't. They are tired of the rat-race, the endless shopping malls, 2-hr commutes...life here is slower, quieter, cheaper certainly, and more relaxing. The clean air and desert mountains at sunset are especially serene. But I don't think you appreciate that sort of thing. You failed to mention the REAL blight on this small, beautiful, desert town: things are less expensive here and many transients, some with drug abuse tendencies, are drawn as well. But this is a solvable issue which I, and other like-minded citizens can help alleviate. I would like to leave you with the well-known quote: Wherever you go, there you are. Rather than bashing your surroundings, why not try a different attitude? You might actually appreciate what your situation has to offer and LEARN something about yourself in the process. Or better yet, if you see a problem, why not help make it better?
