Not what it used to be.

My husband and I were both born in California. We were excited to move back when we were given the opportunity. However, we have been very dissapointed. The population has increased so dramatically, and what we both remember as the "friendly" californians have largely moved out of state. The air is horribly dirty, and all of the attractions are now so full of people, we end up opting to stay home. We are currently renting a home for $2300 a month... it's not a large home, about 1700 sq ft in Orange County. When we think of what we could afford in other states, we get really ready to move. The middle-class doesn't do so well out here. We will move, but will most likely continue to visit.
