Review of Carlisle, Pennsylvania

Carlisle PA Quality of life
Star Rating - 5/31/2008
Carlisle is a great place to raise a family. The schools are good, crime's under control, the area is historic. Residents are very active in the community, creating many opportunities for family activities like sports, music, theatre, etc. The cost of living is good (below national average). Cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and New York are all within day trip driving distance. The greater PA capital area provides many avenues for employment.

The negatives here are air quality (not good for asthma and allergies), and trucks. Carlisle is a trucking hub for much of the Eastern seaboard. Interstates here are packed with trucks, making travel somewhat harrowing. Trucking is an economic boon here, but most of us notice the downside.

Many people in the Carlisle area are ignorant to the pollution facts. Not only does the horrible air effect asthma and allergy sufferers it effects all citizens. The biggest problem with Carlisle PA is the PM 2.5. It's the highest in the nation(or recently quoted 9th highest). The PM 2.5 is toxic(mostly produced from truck diesel) and can cause CANCER in children while their lungs are most vulnerable. It can also cause asthma and other lung conditions as well as making those present conditions worse. The pediatricians in Carlisle will better explain the reason asthma is so high in the area as well as the risk and development of lung conditions amongst children and other populations. The local heart doc is also very involved with the FACTS about the air pollutionn and it's long term effects on all people in Cumberland County. Other than the air pollution Carlisle is a lovely place to live!
