A question about the attitudes of the people.

I have a question for people who live in the Charleston but moved there from other places, about the attitudes of the people of the area. Please forgive my ignorance but we are considering a move to the area and I am interested in finding out how welcoming the residents are towards New Yorkers... er Yankees (and Catholics). I don't know if a vacation would give us a true feeling for the people because, everyone is nice when you're spending money but when you settle down next to them they may not be so welcoming. It is also important because we have a 4 year old daughter and would not want her to have a difficult transition into a move like that. Thanks.
P.S. I won't mention that 2 of my relatives fought for the Union.
