Outsider Review of Charlotte, NC

I came to this state for a job in 2011 (Chapel Hill) and stayed because of a relationship that took me to Charlotte, where we still live today.
We live in a suburban neighborhood, in our own home we built new. This area is quieter than city-center, for sure, but since the neighborhood builder reneged several neighborhood building features this has become a much less desirable location.
I know other people enjoy Charlotte, but from I've gleaned over time these people are from heavily populated states/areas previously. Not me. I've from a rural northeastern state with a population of less that 2,000 people. I'm used to space to roam, air to breathe, and privacy to do as you please on your own property.
Also the "southern mentality" runs true here, as does this city as a "sanctuary" city. I disagree with both premises.
The only thing I like here is the White Water Center, an official Olympic Training Center, and the Catawba River.
