Gotta agree with Phil. I used to love it here! Lived in Coeur d'Alene for 20+ years, and it's gotten markedly worse, particularly in the last few years. The cost of living is high, while wages remain low. Houses are largely outside the price range of local workers as California escapees drive home prices up.
Violent crime is on the rise. Roughly weekly there's a story about a convenience store or bank being robbed. Just a couple of days ago someone got shot during a local bank robbery. Robberies used to be a rare occurrence. In the last couple years there have been multiple instances of area carjackings, including one where the car's owner was murdered. Where I live, I come home regularly to find my street blocked off for police searches.
And traffic is terrible now. Really bad. What used to be a 12 minute drive to my workplace just five years ago has turned into a minimum of 30-45 minutes.
If you'd asked me 10 years ago, even 5 years ago, whether moving to Coeur d'Alene was a good idea, I'd have said yes. Now, though? Not such a great place anymore.
There is still wilderness nearby for camping, fishing, hunting, things of that nature. Summers are short but pleasant here, and the end of summer lightning storms can be awesome. The winters are great if you really like snow and long stretches of cold, sunless days. You might go a month or two without seeing the sun. The winter is pretty great if you don't have to drive much, or if you enjoy driving on snow and ice.
