Christine - I don't usually reply to messages on this board, but I was touched by yours. I was looking at the bestplaces descriptions on Denver because I REALLY REALLY wanted to move there for a couple years, but it never worked out for our family - and I think the Lord has really blessed us in that. After my husband's retirement from the Navy we ended up temporarily in Stafford, VA - and we have been there for 11 years now. It is fairly flat and unremarkable looking (nothing like the Front Range :( ), and the traffic is pretty bad, but people here are generally friendly (except on the highways), it is very heavily populated by military and retired military, there are lots of jobs in DC (forty miles away but there are various commuting options) AND the school system is quite good. Our 13 y/o autistic son started in pre-school here and is now totally mainstreamed - largely due to his excellent teachers. Just as importantly, he has never been bullied or mistreated by classmates. We also know several inter-racial families in our area, and as far as I know they have never experienced overt discrimination or bigotry here. If you are in a position to move, you might consider Stafford, VA...
