Great Cost of Living with Drawbacks

If you are strictly concerned about the cost of living, then El Paso is the place for you! The low cost of housing is amazing! There are many cities where you couldn't get a studio apartment for what you would pay for a single family home here. However, if you are considering moving to the area, I suggest coming via an employment transfer where you get to keep a good salary because jobs in this city don't pay very much. People here think making $10 an hour is good.
The people are nice and the Mexican food is to die for. Other than that, there's not much else to write home about. Other than Wal-Mart and Albertson's there aren't any other grocery stores. If you are looking for a health and/or organic food store, there's only one small Sun Harvest store. For the most part you have the basic retail stores, but don't look for anything high end like a Nordstroms, Crate and Barrel, or Pottery Barn. You have to drive 3-4 hours to Albuquerque or Tucson for anything like that.
The good news is that all of this is slowly changing. There will be thousands of soldiers and their families moving into the area over the next 5 years and many retailer are considering El Paso for new stores.
