Review of Eugene, Oregon

Heartbreaking
Star Rating - 5/29/2006
The amount of crime and suffering in this city is unbelievable (and I grew up in East LA). There are homeless people EVERYWHERE and abandoned animals begging for food. The homeless shelters are bursting at the seams, crime is nearly as high here as it is in Compton, and 1 in 4 Lane Country residents have to get food from the food bank. Living here has broken my heart.

Sorry lady but city-data.com is not a factual source. If you can't see the homeless people begging on every corner then i suggest you get your eyes checked. The only place i've seen with more homeless meth addicts is sanfransico. At least River Rd is away from most the crap, but then it's not really in Eugene either.

This is just not true. I don't know where these statistics and statements came from, but a link proving any of it would be helpful. According to city-data.com, Eugene's crime index was 367.2 in 2006, compared to 660.9 for Compton and the nations average of 382.1. Higher means more crime. According to the Oregon Food Bank Network, 18,264 people are served per month by Food for Lane County, which runs 34 food bank programs. There are an estimated 337,870 people in Lane County, meaning .05% of residents visit food banks. I am not trying to diminish our real problem, but 1 in 4? Not true. Lane Shelter Care reports approximately 1600 homeless. This is an estimate, but far from "homeless people EVERYWHERE". As far as the "abandoned animals begging for food" I can not find statistics but will say I do not see them around my River Road home or my West Eugene office. I am at a loss as to why this person is painting such a false picture. Eugene has crime and homeless, hungry, and poor people definitely, but nothing like what is portrayed.

I am from Los Angeles and have traveled 3 times to Eugene in the last 3 years, most recently two weeks ago. I saw no one who seemed homeless, no doubt they are around, but in the downtown area (day and night), SW, and S not a soul. Never saw animals wandering around hungrey, in fact, I was very impresed by the Animal Shelton near the airport, they have TV for the animals to watch. If Sabella thinks the "amount of suffering in this city is unbelievable," she should visit Calcutta or New York City. In fact, people in Eugene look pretty contended on the whole relative to LA. I would say, however, the prepared food is less than inspiring. Not a high income area per se, its basically a small rural city (160,000) with another (140,000 i adjacent Springfield). There are beautiful homes and many middle class homes but there is seemingly an abundance of old wood "working class" homes with lush vegetation everywhere. On the whole Eugene is a very desirable place; smaller city, very nice public transporation system and library, fine University, plenty of outdoor activities and intelligent people, with a very fine concert hall.
