Little crime/low housing costs/friendly people

I am only a short timer here (two years)but have already become accustomed to, and appreciative of,the lack of violent crime. There is no fear of walking alone at night or being mugged at any time. Though things can be stolen and there is a meth problem in the region, people are very trusting and I have never had to lock my doors. There aren't any drive by shootings, people know one another and are very friendly. The cost of housing is substantially lower than anywhere else I've ever lived and the countryside is very peaceful. I will miss a lot of what this small town, away from everything, offers. Jobs are scarce at wages one would be accustomed to in comparable towns near larger cities. The nearest city is 1 1/2 hours away. (Columbia) That is the biggest drawback. There are two excellant colleges-Truman State and KCOM. If you teach at one of the colleges, the pay is not too bad.
