VERY HORRIABLE DON"T MOVE THERE!!!My parents moved me there at 12, and we got the heck out of dodge when I was 16. Our neighbors came over to talk to us when we first bought our house, and the first thing they asked is "what religion are you" well my moma answered "Baptist..except my husband..he's catholic." The woman looked as us and said apoligetically..I'll pray for him. And walked off. We NEVER heard from her again. THe other neightbors were just as bad. Bible belt is okay, but when you are the same religion just not going to THIER church, and shunned...that's rediculous. My 8th grade teacher not only had a southern accent but a horiable winey voice when she talked. it was at least 2 weeks before me and my brother could understand what she was saying. The cute southern accent you see on T.V. isn't present here. They are a combination of trailor park and new york city. Not to mention at montvale elementary in Maryville Tn, which is south of Knoxville, (k thru 8)our eighth grade friend took the principal hostiage in 1998 or 1999. Made headlines everywhere. Very rare I know, but still just added one more log to the fire. It is very pretty. Just don't expect any thing from Dollywood theme park. It's just silver dollar city (branson missouri) bought by Dolly Parton and covered in butterflies and flowers. It literally use to be SDC.And just so you know, if you live out side the city limits...EVEN IF IT IS ONLY 3 blocks, make sure you check into the fire department. Our house caught on fire and we were charged for the use of the fire truck, men and equipment. And fined. Turns out you have to pay a yearly fee for the firemen, or you get billed when you do need them. They don't tell you that when you move there from out of state. :(
The good thing is when they even CALL for snow. School is cancelled. the 2% of kids that live in the mountains can't get the busses up the hills safely. So the rest of us reaped the benifits from that. :) The people aren't friendly and most of them HATE tourists. My TEACHER had a bumper sticker that read "if it's tourist season, why can't we shoot em?" You pretty much get voted off the island if you weren't born there. But it is pretty and the cost of living is okay. Tubing down the mountain streas are fun. But how often do you do that if you live there? Just visit. And Cades COve is just 11 looped miles of trees. and bumper to bumper trafic to see...TREES. THere is 1 or 2 rebuilt log cabins OFF the road with a short hike. Just go
