Little Rock has some nice areas - Hillcrest, the Heights, and West Little Rock. Much of the central part of town is low-income and high crime.
People are friendly, but in a way that troubles me. They seem mainly friendly to each other, and not to newcomers. I've been here over six months and feel I have not made any friends at all.
There also seems to be a certain racial tension (perhaps not surprising given the historic events surrounding desegregation) which I notice every time I encounter an African-American person, especially the cashiers at the local, mostly white, supermarket. It'something I never felt in Chicago (where I'm from) or in California (where I lived for many years).
