Having lived in Moline for over 30 years, I can say that I can't WAIT to relocate. While some may say that the residents are friendly, these individuals are usually visiting the area and don't live here full-time. Most people I deal with on a daily basis are rude and inconsiderate. Education is not valued whatsoever. For those that do pursue a college degree, they leave the area in droves because their education is seen as a detriment to many employers. Thus, the remainder of the community comprises largely of older retirees and young, uneducated men and women who take low-paying positions and thus, have a hard time living in the area. We have continued drives for school supplies, hats, coats, toys, food, etc. as people simply can't survive on the minimum wage positions that are the bulk of the job opportunities in this area. If you are a young professional, be sure to steer clear of the area. Big employers are virtually nonexistent unless you work for Deere and Co. or the Rock Island Arsenal. While jobs are a major issue in the area, the best the community is coming up with is to try to lure a hog processing plant here. There's also a prison you can apply to. I know that's what every college grad wants to do with their degree! Although there are new housing developments being built near the Mississippi River, the fact that there are no jobs in the area that would enable someone to actually purchase one of these overpriced properties shows the reverse logic of the area. The river is seen as a major attraction, but once you get here, there aren't any jobs, nothing to do and the wonderful river is nothing more than a brown, mirky mess. Can't fish in it because fish are toxic and misshapen; can't swim in it because you'll likely get some type of infection. Unless you want to gamble, bowl or see a movie, there's little in attractions. Most have to drive 3.5 hours to Chicago. We have two malls and both are basically ghost towns. More empty spots for lease than actual stores to shop in. The busiest store at Southpark Mall is Dollar Tree. Weather is horrible. Basically have two seasons: summer and winter. Lots of humidity. Yes, the housing is reasonable, but this is also starting to change. Housing developments are now reaching into the rural areas, with homes being built in the $300,000+ range. Crime is relativey low, but gangs come down from Chicago to "hide out" and thus, gang symbols or popping up more and I wouldn't walk at night ar

Virtually every statement in this rant is unadultered bull----. The Quad-Cities area is not an "A-list" community like a Portland or a Madison, but it far, far, far better than what is being described here. My wife and I moved here from Madison, Wisc., (a great place) about 15 years ago, and while we wish there was a bit more art and culture and shopping here in a "downtown" presence, the Quad-Cities, as a whole, has proven to be a great place to raise kids and stay happy.
