Review of Newport News, Virginia

Easy to get around town
Star Rating - 6/18/2006
The best thing about Newport News is that it's a linear city that runs North to South along the James River. The two main drags are Jefferson Avenue (named after Thomas Jefferson) and Warwick Blvd. The Southern part of the City is old and industrial with Shipyards, Ports and CSX Rail yards. The northern end or "Denbigh" is suburban with Malls, country clubs, and commercial parks. There's a Particle Research Center, a brand new town center and liberal arts college (Christopher Newport University). Most folks work for the Shipyard or Ft. Eustis Army Base. The two hospitals aren't bad, and there's a lot of Museums for navy buffs. Ella Fitzgerald grew-up in the East End but be careful there at night. Newport News is the only city in Southeastern Virginia with an Amtrak Station, Greyhound Station and International Airport.

Missing NN with every word you spoke. I left thinking that ATL would be better for me and my daughter, however, it is worse. I am looking to move back. Traffic is getting worse yes, but try getting to work from a rural city in GA to downtown ATL everyday, simply murder. Never gotten to work on time yet. I drove three miles from my home on Oyster Point Road to the Airport for 15 years and aside for the income, and the manager I would have stayed. I did want to purchase a home though, but the prices are out of my league.

Obviously, a senior citizen wrote this. Nostalgic for a life that once was. I am 65 and I am glad to have left NN. I should have left before. I moved out, left my Wurlitzer piano and cothing, housewares and told the neighbors to help themselves. Murder rate, no jobs unless U work for goverment jobs or the shipyard. Slave wages and high expenses. The place is not tourist-friendly, so I do not recommend anyone even visiting there. And I live in the suburbs of ATL. Moved summer of 2008 with MY daughter Karen to a rural area surrounding ATL. She drives 12 miles a day and gets to work on time everyday.
