I have lived here for 4 years and have seen many positive changes until the slow down in the economy. There is some effort to make the downtown area more appealing as a live, work and play community. But it still just has a few restaurants to walk to and no movie theater. Nice park downtown, Lake Eola. You need a car here not a pedestrian/ transpotation city.
I think housing costs are cheaper than other places however the pay scale is also low because the majority of jobs are in the service industry in particular Disney.
Schools are overcrowded -many having twice as many students than what the building was designated for. Most schools have 10-30 portables outside of the building taking over play fields etc.
I would prefer more ethnic, political and religious diversity. Many people are conservative and vote Republican, do not want to pay taxes even if means we pay a lot for toll roads, have a very little in social services and the schools are a mess. We have a couple of mega churches.
We do have a large Hispanic population primarily Puerto Ricans. Some racial tensions between Orlandians and Puerto Ricans.
I have lived all over and Orlando has a Southern feel to it. Like GA, SC and NC.
Weather is great in Fall, Winter and Spring but the summers are brutally hot and humid as well as buggy.
