Review of Orlando, Florida

Lesson in Frustration
Star Rating - 7/26/2006
Think long and hard before moving down here. Just like any other place there are some positives but the quality of life here is rather low overall. I'll start with what I like. In Orlando you can drive to the east coast in an hour or spend the day at the gulf beaches which are 3 hours away. The downtown area and airport is clean and modern looking, the weather is great from mid-October up until early April. From what I've read the employment picture here is OK with a low unemployment rate but most of the jobs are service related and center on the hotel/resort area south of the city. Unfortunately, though, I agree with some of the negative posts. The intellectual level and culture here is non-existant. Most people here would rather spend a couple hours at the gym or washing/waxing their low rider pick-up truck than pick up a book. Overall, people here seem quite shallow and self-absorbed and I've lived in other parts of the state, NH, Mass, TN, and NC. The drivers here are more dangerous and aggressive than anywhere (and that includes Boston and NYC too!). there are no relaxing commutes here as you will be tailgated, cut off, and countless people run red lights here just to save 5 seconds. Don't even attempt to cross the street as ewe'll be risking your life. Law enforcement is lax for the most part as cops drive just as poorly. Overall, the sun shines almost every day but you'll wish it didn't in the summer as you melt on the way to your car. Its above 90 degrees with stifling humidity from early May -early October. Finally, the most annoying aspect of this city is the refusal of some groups to assimilate here and speak English. Be prepared to hear Spanish everywhere you go. I was surprised and thought the problem only existed down near Miami. Its impossible to visit a coffee shop or bookstore cafe without being assaulted by someone yippper-yapping into their cell phone or two-way in Spanish. "MIRA!!! Poppy...blah, blah, OYE! Pregunta". If you're considering a move to Florida head to Tampa-St Pete or Bradenton/Sarasota. People still speak English over there.
