Unfortunately Carrie, the scene you depict happens in every major city in the US...Raleigh is rapidly growing into one of those cities - like Philly or Houston or NYC or any really, it has a growing crime problem and a lot of skewed numbers and a lot of poor black people. I lived in Raleigh for 15 years and I truly hated the place, but mostly for the weather and bad transit. No rapid transit to speak of, FYI, so everywhere you go will take a LOOONG time and you'll have to have a car. Also, in the summer it's stiflingly hot, but the winters are relatively mild. Youth is a big part of Raleigh with Chapel Hill, Duke, NCSU, Meredith, and many many more colleges in the immediate vicinity...it all makes this a great place if you're young but otherwise maybe not. Durham and Raleigh are fairly diverse but not very well-integrated, while Chapel Hill and Cary are purely white almost and almost exclusively wealthy. The upside to all this variance and rapid growth is that there are MANY MANY jobs, but not necessarily great places to live.
