Review of Raleigh, North Carolina

I have lived in Raleigh for 18 years. The month of August is terribly hot and humid. If you are not a southerner you will never be accepted here and will always be referred to as a "Yankee". They have tried to remake downtown to no avail. Have a lot of nice dining facilites downtown, but don't have a glass of wine with your meal. You'll get harassed by law enforcement once you leave to go home. Smoking is also banned in bars, so if are a smoker, don't expect any rights.

If you get outside the city limits you will see confederate flags flying everywhere. If you are still determined to try the south I would try Greenville, SC - smaller - closer to the mountains - more of an industrial base for jobs - located halfway between Charlotte and Atlanta.

Funny--I have lived in Raleigh for almost the same number of years and can not recall anyone else being called a Yankee. Perhaps your behaviors are such that they don't blend in well and people excuse it due to where you come from. I suggest your drinking and driving would be a problem in most cities because I have never been stopped once in NC for drinking and I am 59 years old. I always partake a glass of wine so maybe it wasn't the one glass that was an issue--maybe it was the several. And infringing on other peoples breathing space in inconsiderent. We don;t have an issue with what you are doing to your body--but we do have an issue with what you do to ours. Don'e assume that becuase we grow tobacco that everyone is pro-smoking. That is a falsehood as more and more people are educated to the dangers of smoking. I have been outside of the sity thousands of times and I am trying to imagine where you saw the Confederate flag. Maybe you can tell me where so I can find it the next time. I would suggest you find a city more suitale to your style--one that allows drinking and smoking and rudeness. It certainly isn't Raleigh and you certainly would feel out of place with an attitude like you possess. I beleive Greenville would be better suited becuase I knw for sure they have Confederate flags there and alot more rednecks than you will find in Raleigh.
