Review of Red Bluff, California

Red is the operative word

I'm a native Californian and have lived in or traveled the entire state. Red Bluff is one of most odd places in the entire state. I've lived here 10 years and I'm still considered a new-comer and an outsider. This town is like having a little bit of Arkansas right in the middle of California. The mentality here is ultra-conservative with an alcoholic twist. This town voted 70% for George Bush in both elections. I had my Obama yard sign stolen out of my yard during the last election. People here are nice, but don't talk about Obama, the environment, or gun control (You just might get shot.) There is a permanant under-class that lives in this town. It isn't uncommon to see a 47 year-old great-grandma! There is a permanant wealthy-class of landowners and ranchers and farmers. The sad thing is the working class or middle-class is small and shinking.
30 minutes out of town on three sides and you're in God's Country. Lassen National Park is an easy 45min. drive. The scenery on a clear day is spectacular and the beautiful Sacramento River runs right through the town.
Our family is currently looking to escape this town because the economy has tanked and I've lost my job. Our house has lost 50% of it's value and I'm tired of the Red-neck mentality that holds this town back.
I have a new son and I don't want him to grow up dressed in Wranglers and Camouflage while failing school and binge drinking. He deserves better.

Robert, you have described the town to a tee. You could not be more accurate.

If you don't want your son to be an alcoholic or fail school then may I suggest being a good parent teaching good morals and values. Ignorance doesn't come from wearing Wranglers or Camouflage, it comes from bad choices and influences

You should leave Red Bluff. We don't need you around.

I was part of that Red luff under class from ages 4 to 18 at which point I had to get the hell out. There is very little this town can offer and very little opportunity to advance ones life style. My mother held two jobs while attaining a degree from Shasta college, all while being a single mother of four. Hard work does not count for much in that town. Unless of course you are some hay buck rancher's son. We first moved there in 1988 and where promptly ostracized by the "respectable" society. My mom wasn't even allowed to rent movies because they couldn't tell the difference between a Native American and a Mexican not that it should have mattered. I've lived in almost every part of the United States since, and can honestly say that Red Bluff is one of the worst. And it is not the location that ruins it, no, it is most definitely the people. Ass backward wonted ignorance runs wild between Los Molines and Mt Shasta.
